Features don't make up for poor reception August 11, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this to replace a first-generation RAZR, and after spending time with it was able to set it up to operate the way I want. But that was rather futile since its reception is not good enough in my semi-rural area in western Mass. Where the RAZR gets 1 or 2 bars, good enough for a phone conversation, the Samsung gets a solid 0 bars (or maybe a flickering 1 bar). Calls drop or are distorted. Maybe the RAZR V3 for me.
I wish there was a 4.5 rating-SWEETUM PHONE December 31, 2007 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Wow this phone is RAD! Ive had it for 2 weeks and I'm already in love. This is my first phone and I paid $130 for it at the AT&T sorte after rebates....i know pretty expensive huh? I was deciding between this phone and the Samsung SGH A707. I was doing alot of research on the internet and figured out the pros and cons and my favorites of each phone. When I finally went to the store to get one they looked pretty different in my hand then on the websites. I only had a couple minutes because the clerk was waiting for me to hurry up. I compared the sizes of the sides, the overall shape (I wanted it to fit in my pocket), the color, and the features. I didnt see the price of the SLM since it wasnt on display so i didnt realyl know what i was in for. The Red Samsung SGH A707 was $40 but i didnt care. I felt like i had a better deal. I brought i home and startd playing with it as soon as i could. It was so cool how it had internet!! I went on my email and looked at all the ringtones and all the cooll features. Later I learned that it cost me money for every minute i was on there.....thats the down part. so my mom went to the store and canceled it. its still very tempting but i realize thats what computers are for.
The Front screen of the phone its pretty great. Its not huge but who needs a huge screen? You can set it to have one of your pictures or you can set it to a clock. It tell syou how many bars you have, how the battery is doing, what day it is, and if you have a new message of if someone is calling. However, it doesnt use as a view finder for the camera. Guess why? cause the camera can rotate! IT smivels back and forth so you can take self portrates with the phone still open, and facing you. The strange part of this is that when you have the camera facing you, you show as upside down....but that does make a huge difference, because once you take the piture you can rotate it. Another down part of this phone is that id doesnt have a camera button on the outside part of the phone (or permanent inside button, but i live without it.
This phone is very sleek and I was surprised to find out that it *does* fit in my pocket! there are no bumps or raised parts and so it is very easy to carry around. I was also glad to find that I havent lost this phone since it is a decent size. soem phoens are just to small for me but this one is just right.
On the side of this wonderful phone there is the volume adjusters and on the other side is a headset jack/charger slot and a MicroSD card slot. The headset jack lets you listen to music without letting the whole world know what you are listening to.
if you open the phone up you see a great screen and the key pad. The screen doesnt do too good in the light but I dont find that very frusterating. On the key pad, I thought that the green and red phone symbols were very stylish. Above them is the Music shortcut and a Mulittasker button....very nice. if you are sending a text message but then remember you had to call someone immaditaly but dont want to exit your message? then VOLIA this is the button for you. you can take your call and then once you're dont you can hang up and get back to your message without haveing to rewrite it! Now thats what im talking about.
Above those keys are the soft keys which dont need much explaning, since every phone has them. beside those is the 'cilver circle' i call it. The Cirlce has its navigation things like left right up and down and an OK in the middle. If you're on the main screen though the OK button uses as a brower shrot cut. the up button is a shortcut to a text message, the left button is a shortcut to MyStuff they call it. the right button is a chat button where you can...you know....chat! While i was poking all the buttons, I also discovered that the Clear button (below the 'cilver circle') is a short cut to the calender. Sneaky Sneaky!
If your're thinking about chooseing this phone stop thinking (save up) and buy it now!
I suggest looking at CNET at www.cnet.com or if you wanna get a specific review about this phone, go to http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phones/samsung-slm-sgh-a747/4505-6454_7-32751900.html?tag=prod.txt.1 even though they are a little harsh.
