Which Target Market are YOU??? January 6, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The way I see it, there are three kinds of people buying this product. The first would include the product's intended market: those who plan on using this to test alcohol content in the field, and determine their ability to drive. The second is limited to parents looking for a way to find out if their under-aged kids have been drinking. The third would include anyone who just wants to put a number on how drunk they are (or can get).
For those of you in group one, keep looking. This product, while compact and sturdy, is clearly designed for a more casual test - not a scientific examination. You will get inconsistent readings, and it isn't unlikely that, when push comes to shove, your results will conflict with a police officer's. That said, I like to think that a cop would go a little easier on someone concerned enough to own their own breathalyzer. (wishful thinking?)
For those of you in group two, this device will do a pretty good job of indicating even the smallest amount of alcohol. Since the difference between a 16 year-old blowing a 0.02 and a 0.06 is negligible (since their grounded either way), the inconsistent readings aren't as much of an issue here. I'm so glad these weren't available in my high school years...
Finally, group three will be somewhat divided regarding this product. While you are able to quantify how drunk you are, the device will only give readings up to 0.12. After that, you'll be blowing the same reading each time. This is good, since putting a number on how drunk you are can only lead to ridiculous contests, challenges, and alcohol poisoning. Also, to get accurate readings, the instructions recommend waiting half an hour after your last drink. I'm guessing Johnny Frat Boy isn't going to have that kind of patience. As if to drive this point home, one morning as I was leaving for work, I rinsed my mouth out with some mouthwash, and decided to give it an early morning try. Imagine my surprise when I blew a 0.12 at 8:30 AM (and no, I didn't drink the night before). No telling what the actual reading was. So for the kids of group two, there is your alibi. Just tell'em you keep mouthwash with you at all times! All of this considered, the price certainly fits a college budget when compared to other devices.
So, a quick recap: Too low-tech for group one. Not a bad choice for group two. Group three, what you're looking for probably doesn't exist in your price range. Use the money for a 30 pack of Natty Light instead.
Works great, saves lives, and good for parental control! August 1, 2006 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I use this device often and it is a good tester for alcohol levels in our blood. Good for checking kids to see if they were drinking where they should not be! As well ofcourse appropriate for preventing drunk driving.
