5 out of 5 stars Multiple buyer of the HP 1040 fax machine   January 27, 2008

I work for a company that has 10 retail stores, and all are equipped with fax machines. I'm slowly replacing various brand fax machines with the HP 1040. So far, all of the HP 1040 fax machines are working flawlessly.

I'm amazed at all the negative reviews for the HP 1040 fax machine on Amazon. Most people will not leave a positive review for a product that is working fine for reasons such as....

"I don't have the time"
"I have better things to do"
"It's such a pain to write reviews for products"

Writing negative reviews becomes a "priority" once the product fails.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE!!!   January 8, 2008
I purchased this fax machine for a small business. I need to send and or recieve a fax about 12 times per year. I am not sure about the quality of this item because I can never use it!! I have 2 phone lines and the machine cannot determine when to pick up with the fax machine. If it is plugged in it picks up the phone and my callers get the annoying fax squeal. I was on the phone for 5 hours off and on with tech support and finally they told me I needed a $50 router device because of my dual phone lines. I purchased the router and can now send a fax but have to plug and unplug the unit before and after each fax. I still cannot recieve an incoming fax, even after the additional investment of $50. I should have just paid the extra money and gotten a really good fax to begin with. I am now almost $150 in the hole and the machine is doing only 1/2 the job.
PITIFUL

1 out of 5 stars WHAT A DUD!   November 23, 2007

We bought the HP 1040 Fax two days ago to replace an older fax machine; and specifically to dispatch an urgent fax message.

Following the "Start Here" pamphlet and the "HP 1040/1050 Fax Series User Guide" scrupulously, we installed the new machine and fired off our urgent fax message... That's what we thought!

The message did not go through. To further test the machine, we checked it against several known fax numbers. Our messages did not go through.

Rechecking the setup instructions, individually and together, we tried resending... Failure again... and again, more failure.

We called in two other personnel to independently check our set up and fax dispatch. Failure.

What a dud!

The machine is now comfortably repacked for return... Well, back to the seller it goes!

POS.
2 hrs on line with tech support first day with screen contrast issue.
Day 2 machine started feeding blank paper to far and jamming documents.
Machine noisy.
Day 3, it's in the trash.
Day 4 received HP 1250, runs like a top, is quiet, and I'm back in business.

2 out of 5 stars mine is the Hp1010 Model   September 20, 2007

i'm supposing that this featured model, the HP 1040 is the upgraded model from my HP 1010 which is identical in appearance, from the picture anyway. I have not been pleased with this fax basically from the beginning, I think I spent about $80 for mine at Staples and thought it would be a good deal, as I have never had any problems with other HP products, we had been using a HP Fax 950 machine at our office for years, was bigger and heavier but was really good fax and lasted a GOOD Ten years before finally just wearing down.

Things I don't like about this HP-1010 (and possibly this same HP 1040)

* There is Not and on/off button, i've got a splitter in the back of my broadband modem for the fax and a phone line and always have to remember to unhook the fax from the splitter. If there was an on/off switch it would make it so much easier.

* Single sheet papers get jammed very easiy, or sometimes they send on my end but don't receive on the other, which gets frustrating because then you have to make a phone call to the person waiting on the fax to see how many pages they actually received.

* A lot of the time when it connects or tries to connect, some sort of different ring comes across, and it doesnt send my transmission, i have to cancel and then try again.

basically those two essential fax qualites are my irks with this machine. I'm trying to see about getting another one, but don't want the same hassles with another fax. I'm using this as a light fax at my home office, and send maybe 5 faxes a day, and don't really receive any at all. I was hoping this would be a good, sturdy, reliable machine, but it doesnt seem to be. I just wonder if this featured model has upgraded and fixed any of these jamming or other problems, myself and from what i've read some of the other users.

I'd look elsewhere before you buy this one, sadly, HP didn't hit the mark on making a good study reliable unit. You do get what you pay for I guess, so I suppose if we want a good machine, we'll just have to spend a little more in the beginning to get a good quality unit in the end.
