3 out of 5 stars Not built for the big heads people!   August 28, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I bought these headphones based on the rave reviews on Amazon and also the amazingly cheap price relative to its more pricier competitors. At first glance I thought I got such a bargain given its build quality, however, as soon as I put them on, I knew right away they were too small for my head. Say a headache after 5 mins of wear! The earpads were comfortable, but too small for my bigger ears. Nevertheless, The NCS performed well and blocked out the majority of surrounding noise. Sound quality was fantastic for the price you pay. So In summary, 5 stars for price, build quality, Great NCS, great sound quality. 1 star for not being comfortable at all.

3 out of 5 stars not very comfortable   August 27, 2008
I received them today and instantly noticed strong discomfort; no matter how I adjusted them, I feel pressure on my ears and also from the top band. So, I walked to BestBuy, and after some time at Bose kiosk I walked away with Bose Around-Ear "triport" type headphones. Same price as this Audio-Technica, but much more comfortable, and sound wise similar or better. I can barely feel having Bose headphones on, while even after short time I'm well-aware of wearing Audio-Technica. I have both front of me right now and alternating - regrettably, it is clear that I'm going to return ATH-ANC7 and keep the Bose. BTW, I bought these for my frequent 10+ hour trans-Atlantic flights.

5 out of 5 stars They work great if you use them fully   August 27, 2008
I work in a very quiet office with conversations erupting frequently around my cubicle. I bought these headphones specifically for that environment. I've been using these now for several months. Putting the headphones on WITHOUT activating the noise cancelling switch knocks down around 50% of the noise. Activating the switch I would say knocks out the advertised 85% of the noise; however, it's only the low frequency noise. Unfortunately, most human voices are not very low frequency and some of the conversation can bleed through (especially women's voices). HOWEVER, if you want over 90% of the outside noises blocked out, connect these headphones to a music source (e.g. an iPod) and you will be hard pressed to hear much of the outside world. While I've never tested this during a fire alarm, I have used this method and had to have co-workers actually tap my shoulder to get my attention for something. Can't tell you how many phone calls I've missed though. If you play music through these phones AND activate the noise cancelling switch, you'll knock out close to 100% of all outside noise. Seriously, you can't hear A THING except the music you're playing! Music plus noise cancellation will put you in solitary confinement. It's great! And these cost about 1/2 as much as the Bose headphones.
I recommended these to a co-worker and she bought the earbud version instead (can't mess up the hair, you know). She seems to have trouble hearing outside noises when she's wearing them, and she says they work well. She seems to like them, but I can tell you that they don't work as well as the headphone version does. It's not physically possible. A large part of the passive noise cancellation (without music or switch activation) comes from physically shielding the ear from the outside noises. I highly recommend these headphones, and I recommend these headphones over the earbuds if you're serious about noise cancelling.

5 out of 5 stars Audio Technica - Worth every $$$$$   August 27, 2008
First of all thanks to those folks who had given good reviews on this product which made me buy this headphones. I fly every week and recently had the pleasure of enjoying my trip on a MD 80 aircraft sitting on the last seat of the plane. I can tell you the only thing that made my life easy on that plane was this headphones. I am definitely happy with the performance of these headphones and would recommend this to my fellow air travellers

1 out of 5 stars Good sound, but don't touch   August 24, 2008
A very good pair of noise reducing headphones. Sound was very good. I had no problem with sound leakage, but the thing fell apart after very light usage. I was pulling the ear piece into place when the plastic holding it to the headband shattered. It's a total loss. I don't know if this is an isolated event, but I'll stay clear of Audio-Technia products in the future.
