Do NOT deal with Amazon.com September 4, 2008 1 out of 36 found this review helpful
This is not worth the hassle if needing to be returned. I returned one on the 20th of Aug as it was a win but the 2nd one I had won, making it as a "GIFT RETURN". I went thru the right steps to return it, going thru the Kindle dept and telling them it was a gift return and writing it on the label PROVIDED TO ME by Amazon.com for UPS. Sent it back, it was signed for on 8-26-08 and supposedly the gift cert is issued in 3-5 days. Well, nothing. They have put in a ticket supposedly, but I have gotten nothing but the run around from Amazon.com. I have had every excuse under the sun. Kindle's must be inspected (not an issue since it was NEVER opened), any excuse you can think of. I even call and asked for the corporate number and was refused it but I found it myself. I called and they said they were transferring me to the Cust Ser Specialist, the highest escalation, in Seattle, I was transferred to the reg cust service dept in WV. I was also guaranteed the website I won it from would not know I returned it and guess what? It appears they gave them the credit on their cc even though it had been marked as a gift return and everything done correctly on my part. I have been an Amazon.com customer for many, many years and will NEVER buy from them again. I believe the Kindle was a good idea but because of their incompetence, it is not worth the chance of getting a product that can only be handled online. I would definitely not recommend this in case you do have problems. I hope Jeff Bezos realizes he is really hurting his business with the customer service attitudes and being refused the ability to talk to a supervisor or anything and I do mean I was REFUSED the option of talking to a supervisor. This company needs to get their act together because they obviously have lost the great customer service they once had. Is it any wonder that sales had gone down at one point and that people are writing stories all over the net about the very poor customer service now? I think not. Jeff Bezos should be ashamed of how this has turned out.

90% Perfect!!! September 3, 2008 3 out of 14 found this review helpful
I've now owned my Kindle for about 3 months. Knowing what I do, I would buy it again in a FLASH.
I read my Kindle every day - mostly books & blogs.
I will tell you what I don't like.
1. Buttons - The Previous & Next Page Buttons get in the way. 2. Switch - The On/Off Switch on the back is inconvenient. 3. Cover - The cover is just junk. 4. Whispernet - Every night between 11pm - 1am Hawaii time, I cannot connect with the Kindle Store. 5. Folders - I wish there were folders to organize my reading material. 6. PDF - I wish PDF reading was seamless. 7. Articles List - I'm still looking for a shortcut to the Articles List. 8. Magazines - I cancelled my magazine subscriptions because the news was old news and the pictures were; well no pictures.
Is this getting picky or what?
What was I worried about?? September 3, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
After combing through thousands of Kindle reviews, I was hesitant about jumping on a rather expensive bandwagon. I feard the user interface was just too primative and unreliable: buttons that that turned pages on their own....an unattractive and flimsy housing....a cover that is useless...etc, etc. So imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to discover that none of the above held true, at least for my Kindle.
The device is much sturdier than I anticipated, and better looking, too. The large page-forward button has been a non-issue, perhaps because I anticipated the problem and have been careful where my fingers stray. The cover, also, has perfomed better than anticipated-- I bought the m-edge cover as insurance, but so far the Kindle cover is performing like a champ.
And having virtually instant access to so many wonderful books has enhanced the quality of my reading life tremendously. Like so many other reviewers here, I recently disposed of several thousand books from my personal library. Although that was hard to do, having the Kindle takes the sting out of being bookless.
If you're vacillating about this purchase, I suggest you put your doubts aside and give it a whirl. With Amazon's return policy, it's a risk-free decision. But I'm betting you won't want to part with it once you have it!
