best reading device i've ever had July 20, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
the amazon kindle is the best reading product i've ever had, there are some down sides like the buttons to change pages are too sensitive and i have to keep going back cause there is no good place to hold it without hitting the changing buttons. I haven't checked all the other stuff on it yet but i like that i can read in bed and not have to flip through the pages to do so. it's also great to take to the doctor's and read while your waiting for them to call you.
Kindle is the best thing since sliced bread July 20, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have had my Kindle since June and it's wonderful. I have read several books already. I show my Kindle off to anyone that I know who is a reader. They all are amazed. I know one person for sure who is looking to buy one. The basic web capability is great! Also, the ability to send documents to my Kindle is a great feature. I keep a log of all the authors and titles I have read. I transferred this information to an Excel file and saved it as a HTML document then emailed it to my Kindle. Now I have my list for reference close at hand. This is the best and most useful electronic product I have ever purchased.
Refreshingly Innovative July 20, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Kudos to Amazon for a great product. I am extremely happy with the Kindle I purchased. It was well designed and makes reading all the more enjoyable. It exceeded my expectations. It performs well and will satisfy any book lover. The common complaints i have heard about the Kindle don't deserve to be called issues at all. They are all matters of mere convenience that, if addressed, will make the Kindle that much better and easier to use. With intent in mind, amazon hit the mark with this one. I highly recommend it.
Traditional book junkie --> Kindle convert July 19, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I received a Kindle as a gift about a month ago, and have been completely converted. Which is saying a lot, as I love physical books.
The Kindle addresses my biggest phobia ever: being stuck in a hotel room late at night with NOTHING TO READ but the Bible in the drawer.
I've read lots of complaints about the hardware design, and they just don't matter; the design may not be as instantly cool as the iPod, but it is functional and doesn't get in the way of the content. So much so, that I find myself sometimes scrabbling at the top corner to turn the page with my finger, as if it were a real book.
The cover is rubbish, however, and I'll be replacing it soon. There isn't anyplace to hold the Kindle; I've seen a third-party cover that provides a right-thumb 'landing' margin, which will greatly improve the reading experience.
There is a lot of free content available, and the download process from Amazon is fantastically quick and reasonably priced. I'd like a better search function for the Kindle store, i.e. search with multiple criteria (genre + subgenre + price + publication year + ...). And I'm hoping the library of available books for Kindle continues to expand.
I have had a PDA (I'm on my second HTC) for years and have tried to read e-books on that, but it just doesn't work as a reader. Ditto reading books on a laptop ... you just can't take a laptop to bed with you.
Battery life is very good. I might wish for a backlight option for reading in the dark, but then of course the battery life would suffer. A booklight works pretty well with the Kindle.
The web browser is a bonus. It isn't a great interface for web browsing, but fine for a quick lookup to answer a question out of what you've just read, without having to remember to go onto the web and look it up later, as with a paper book.
All in all, I give the Kindle 9 out of 10.
Kindle is great a lot more than I expected July 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I wasnt sure what to expect when I tried this device out. I love reading but the piles of books in my closet is a down side. So when i seen that this device instantly provides you with book and there no physicall product to take up room I thought i had to have it. I have used audiobooks and other ebooks on the palm pilot and it wasnt great. I waited a long time to purchase the Kindle, kept checking out the page, then it was backordered for months, thne I finally bought mine a week ago. I LOVE IT!!! It is so easy to use expect for a little minor quirks which i will get into in the pros and cons. It was well worth purchasing, yes the price was high which can be a downfall especailly if a newer version comes out with newer features, but maybe Amazon can provide a update to people who purchased version 1, like the ipod touch allows users to upgrade for a small fee. I love my Kindle and I am sure you will too!! Pros and cons follow since nothing is perfect.
PROS: Looks like ur reading a real book, no strain on eyes Instant delivery of books no waiting for shipping or heavy books Lets you read material before you buy it Battery last for a really long time Can adjust text size, tell me what book lets u do that. Saves ur spot, no losing pages Progress tracker so you know how far you gotten
CONS: Wish there was somekind of built in light Book cover is kind of hard to get the Kindle to stay into Next page button on R side kind of gets in the way when trying to handle the Kindle, easily hit and can change the pages you are reading. Wish there was a easier way to flip through pages to go back to look ahead or back to table of contents.
