3 out of 5 stars Good item - needs work   December 11, 2007

I read alot and was therefore very excited to get Kindle as a gift. I was soon disappointed. The device arrived packaged beautifully and was a treat to open. Kindle takes some time to get used to, some of the buttons are odd, the scrolling device is strange. As is the menu features.

Most of the books I read are not available for Kindle, also I did not realize how annoying it would be to read a magazine or newspaper on the Kindle. It reads like one long word document. The book are slightly easier to read because the text appears on the Kindle almost like it is in the book.

I returned my Kindle.

1 out of 5 stars Why not use Palm instead?   December 11, 2007

What I don't understand is why this product is an improvment. I been reading downloaded books on my Palm PDA for years. The screen is easy to read, backlit (for reading in bed, and not disturbing my wife), smaller than a paperback, and holds dozens of books. The battery life is long, and it has other functions.

Why pay $399 for a Kinder.

I would almost rate this no stars, but I will be charitable and give it one.

3 out of 5 stars Kindle is kind of booring   December 11, 2007

I have no Idea in this age of digital electronics, how some one come up with a black and white screen device with such a high price. Most of the text books, leave aside news paper and magazine etc, uses some kind of color images , illustration etc..but with this device its all black and white.

3 out of 5 stars Economist Magazine sub needed   December 11, 2007

I am almost over the edge on purchasing a Kindle. As soon as an Economist magazine subscription is available, I will pull the trigger.

Between the WSJ and Economist, I'm shelling out almost $300/yr in subscriptions. Going with the Kindle would be about a 2 year breakeven assuming the Economist was priced similar to the other magazines.

It would definitely be worth having the convenience and go-anywhere ability of the print subscriptions for substantially lower ongoing cost with some eco-friendly side benefits.

4 out of 5 stars I sort of love my Kindle   December 10, 2007

I have had my kindle long enough to order another one for my sister. So I guess I like enough to spend $800 on them! After a couple of weeks of use there are things I love and things I hate. I love the Kindle Store and the delivery system. Brilliant and that alone makes it worth the price. The display is perfect and easy to read. I actually read more now because it is such a pleasure. I carry different books for different moods...and on an airplane I am carrying around that much less stuff....Downloading PDF's may be the killer ap for me. I think I can download all the manuals and reference materials that I need to carry around. Again, that alone makes it worth the price.

The ergonomics are pretty bad. Hard to pick up the thing without changing a page. Overall design is 90's...really dated. Interface is okay...but slow if you are not going through a book in a linear fashion. They need to figure out a better way to skip pages.

Is this Book 2.0. Yes....and it bodes well for the future. By the time version 3 rolls around this thing will change the world and the way we think about and use and buy books and written material.
