On my dashboard, this thing slid right off on the first tight turn. Useless.
So clearly the effectiveness of this product depends on the material on your dashboard.
Good way to break your GPS if your dash isn't of a "compatible" material for this...

Bought it for my daughter to use with the Garmin c550 that I had just bought her. She loves it. We live in an area that has had many thefts of navigation systems from the car. Police have advised not only to remove GPS system when leaving the car, but to remove windshield based mount as well. They even suggest that you wipe off the mark the suction cup leaves on the window as the thieves are aware of that the suction cup mark means that a GPS system is in the car. The portable Friction Mount makes life a lot easier. And Amozon's price was $20.00 less then Best Buy.

It is very useful for my nuvi 350. It sits on my dashboard of my Taurus 2003. I always use it... I have not used the mounts supplied by Garmin.
Easy, easy, easy November 25, 2007
This was so easy as there was no installation. It makes it very easy to change between cars and hide on the floor. Another passenger can also change the location easily as you can move the GPS. It does not move at all on the dashboard while driving, it is very stable and secure. After this purchase I would never put in a semi-permanent or permanent mounting device in my car. Very good buy and Amazon has the best price.
 Friction mount better than I thought November 24, 2007
After my suction cup mount deteriorated from overexposure from the sun I needed a new mount and since California law states no suction cup mounts, I decided to pickup this dashboard mount. I didn't want to get this at first because I liked my suction cup mount but after using for a while it's actually easier to tuck away under the seat while you're reaching your destination.
As far as functionality, it grips the dashboard really well. It hasn't moved an inch, even in hard turning. It lays fairly flat and the neck swivels 360 degrees for optimal angle.
