2 out of 5 stars Major On/Off and Shutter Lag   April 2, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

If you are one that cherishes taking photos of precious moments in an instant than this camera isnt for you. There is a lag to turn the camera on then then anther lag when the camera attempts to focus and shoot. If you have children then dont' get this, you'll lose out on those natural/unposed/instant shots. Product is also Made in China and build quality is not as solid as my old Fuji Finepix V10. ON/OFF Button is Raised and not flush with the body so it always goes on in my pocket. Pass on this item and look into a Casio (Zero shutter lag), Canon (Solid and Made in Japan) or Finepix (Option to take 2 simultaneous photo's with and without flash at once).

Excellent product. A little lacking in zoom but for that price it's a real bargain.

2 out of 5 stars Just ok for the price   March 26, 2008

Though it has better camera controls, the picture quality and view quality was not upto the expectation.

I got this Nikon S51 for Christmas, and I absolutely LOVE IT!
There's one major problem with it.
Yeah, you've probably heard this...but it's worth considering if you are thinking about the pros and cons of this camera.
The phone has a pretty bad shutter lag! It's not as bad as it could be, but it really annoys me when I see the Canons, and how they can take instant pictures when I have to wait for mine to focus after I hold down the shutter button.
It's really impossible for me to take fast-moving pictures. It makes me wait a second or two, because it has to focus it. While it's nice that it does that, it's still extremely annoying. I've missed many shots.
If you are the type of person, like me, that that doesn't bother, then this camera will definitely work for you!
It takes really amazing pictures, too. I definitely have to mention that!

The camera has amazing features on it.
of course, there's the wheel, which is my absolute favorite thing about this camera! It's much easier to navigate through menus, and look at pictures...it is definitely a selling point!
Also, it has a 3" LCD screen. That's a major plus!
One other thing I found really awesome about this camera was that it had a built-in picture program that allowed you to put together pictures in a slide show, with music playing in that back ground. That's really awesome!

However, the major con of this camera having a huge shutter lag really brought it down to three stars.
I would get this camera again, but I think I would consider a few more a little more heavily though.
However, I'm REALLY impressed with the picture quality! THEY ARE AMAZING! I just happened to find that it had a lot of dust on the lens a lot, and I got big circles...but every camera does that. It's not an issue.

If you are thinking about getting this camera, DO IT!!! I REALLY like it. Sometimes I find it's hard for me to put it down. It never gets boring!
However, if you find that you like to take pictures of kids and animals, I don't reccomend this camera for you. You will find you are missing a few photo opportunities in the event of trying to take a picture. It rarely happens, but if it's something extremely quick, it will.
I love this camera!!

4 out of 5 stars Decent Point & Shoot Camera Overall...   March 9, 2008

I mainly shoot a Nikon D80 DSLR with an assortment of lenses. I purchased the Coolpix S51 as a very portable backup for when use I'm not lugging the D80 around.

I won't compare the S51 to the D80; they are different cameras with very different expectations for each. I just would like to note some observations on my experience with the S51.

a) Outside shots are perfectly exposed and very sharp at all zoom levels. This is where this camera excels, you will be impressed.

b) Inside shots are harsh with the built-in flash; but no worse than any other point and shoot camera.

c) The autofocus system takes more time than I would like both inside and out.

d) The camera is extremely compact and light, but feels sturdy.

e) I've gotten about 150 shots per charge on the battery with a mix of flash and non-flash shots.

f) The power button is mind boggingly frustrating; I absolutely wish Nikon made this button have to pressed for a couple of seconds before turning the camera on or off. You have to pretty much assume the camera will be turned on and off, on and off if you carry it in your pocket.

g) High-ISO performance is pretty poor, but no worse than other point and shoot cameras.

h) The camera produces better images than the LCD screen displays in playback mode; the LCD for lack of a better word is 'coarse'.

Overall I'm happy with the S51. It serves its needs for me when I am in situations where I want to get a shot and I don't have my DSLR with me.
