5 out of 5 stars Awesome GPS!   November 29, 2007

I bought this for my husband for his birthday. He loves it! We have already used it several times. It's fun to use and user friendly. I highly recommend this for the use, functionality and enjoyment that our whole family has gotten from it in the last month! We especially like the showing of the roads rear the road we're on because you can be more aware of potential traffic approaching the road.

In comparison to Harmon/Kardon GPS500, this TomTom blows H/K away. I thought I would be losing some coolness factor going down to a smaller screen but the display on this looks just as great and I get the same feel as the slightly larger screen units, happy to save the cash.

The HK in comparison would lead you with bad directions, in the same instance the TomTom also fails in locating some address (HK has more instances) BUT at least the TomTom does not attempt to misguide you. These newer editions, TomTom give you the ability to correct the database!

The unit is much faster in response to commands, and recalculates routes in a split second. The only gripe one can have is no AC charger, and no case. However if you are one of the lucky ones, get the special addition which includes those items in a package, I purchased that during black friday sale from Amazon for $159. You just can NOT be unhappy with a deal like that.

FYI in comparison to MSN maps, Google mags, they all have the same inconsistances for the same "trouble" addresses. I feel the TomTOM has an edge over coming these situations, i.e. use of cross streets.

3 out of 5 stars Package very hard to open, support hotline closed when it should be open   November 28, 2007

This product's good features are well documented elsewhere so I'll skip them. Instead I will concentrate on two things that buyers, and I think holiday buyers in particular, should be aware of.

The first is the extremely durable plastic package the product comes in. I own a lot of goods that were sold wrapped in plastic shells of one sort or another, and this one was among the very worst - possibly _the_ very worst - to get open. If you are considering this for a holiday gift, be aware that the festivities may well stop for several minutes while the happy recipient struggles to get the package open to admire your generous gift. Persons of delicate sensibilities are warned that there could also be swearing.

The second issue is that the support hotline is not open during the support hotline's nominal hours of operation. This too may be a detriment to the user's or gift recipient's initial experience with the product. I got a recorded message informing me of the hotline's hours - until 7:30pm Eastern on weekdays - and informing me that the support hotline was therefore now closed. At the time of my call it was 4pm Eastern.

I have given the product a nominal three stars because of its other good attributes. However matching a customer support line's automated announcement to its actual operating hours seems rather basic, and failing to do this makes me worry about what other surprises and inconveniences may be in store.

4 out of 5 stars Good value for money   November 28, 2007

I bought TomTom One Third Edition in online deal on Black Friday sale from one of the websites for just $105 (after getting $20 gift card). For that value I am extremely satisfied with the product. It's been couple of days since I got it but so far I am very happy.

Screen: It's a 3.5 inch color screen, which is standard for basic GPS. Map looks pretty sharp and clear on TFT LCD touchscreen (320x240 pixels, 64,000 colors.

Ease of Use: Extremely easy to use. All you do is connect this device in your car (if first time, using car charger) and just go thru the basic demo if you have never used GPS before. Set up your home location and that's it. You are ready to roll! All instructions are spoken loud enough without beig irritating. Unit is very portable and got a very good form factor.

Map: Map is pretty accurate with tons of POI locations. It has about 5 million Point of Interest database, which is good. It located pharmacy stores such as CVS, Walgreens and gas stations around my home accurately.

Help Me! Menu: Help Me! menu is indeed a nice to have for emergency use if you get lost!

Map Share: With Map Share software you can update and share maps with others as well.

Map Updates: FREE. This is very important feature. Many other companies charge extra to update latest map data. On this unit you get it for free! Just install the software (when you connect tomtom to your PC/Laptop, it will install the software), connect your devide using USB cable and select what all info you want to update.

WHAT I DONT LIKE:
===============

1. If I want to search any greek or asian restaurant in the city, I CAN'T do that. If I know name of the restaurant and it is in its POI database, it will show it but it won't give me list based on my criteria. This was a significant downer for me.

2. Browse Map functionality is not that user friendly. When map opens in "browse map" mode, zoom in and zoom out is very cumbersome.

3. It doesn't like taking u-turns. So you get that turn right-turn left-turn left thing - which is annoying.

But overall, excellent device. I would not pay 250 bucks - the price it was selling not long before. But for anything less than 150 I would happily suggest anyone to buy this.
