Good but Not Perfect September 29, 2008 The Good: Lots of great features / overall value
The Bad: The speakers are in the back, the speech is often not loud enough and can be static-y.
The Ugly: The volume and dimmer controls are limited and difficult to use. The same quirks and limitations that afflict other GPS units.
I bought our Magellan 4250 two weeks ago to travel across the use and navigate around the DC area. It has been great for that. We have had a Garmin over 3 years. My wife likes its user interface better, and I like its mechanical volume control better. I am getting used to how this unit controls. It is different, but I think it is OK. The more I use it, the more I like it.
I got mine for $235. It not only provides great GPS directions (not perfect) with street names and addresses vocalized, it also provides hands free Bluetooth cell phone capability. It is loaded with great features at a reasonable price.
Need more color options for route. September 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a pretty good unit but one major item lacking is the ability to choose the color of the background map and routing color. My son is colorblind and when the daytime screen is on and he programs a route, it can be difficult to see the route against the background. He said it is very close in color and in bright light sometimes he cannot see the route at all. Magellan should allow the owner to choose what color scheme to use for the background and route. I hope Magellan reads these reviews and will consider it for the next model or the next firmware upgrade.
Good GPS but one bad feature to me anyway September 26, 2008 Am very pleased with my or say my wife's Magellan but one feature is bad - the screen is very hard to see in day light and have to hold it down in some shade which means she can not keep it on the widow adapter. I have in my car a IWAY 500C by Lowrance and it is very easy to see. We have no other problems with the unit as I see some have. I wander if any one else has the same problem.
gps in use September 26, 2008 GPS, MAGELLAN MAESTRO 4250. Prior to this unit I had the Magellan Roadmate 800. I liked the voice commands of the 4250 and the larger and thinner screen. I found the 4-hour charge time very useful to review and program routes when out and about very useful. The Roadmate 800 I feel is more user frendly. I found the POI's and AAA information outstanding. I felt that the road and street information on the map screen could use larger print. The voice commands were very clear and worked great. I used this unit an lot on my recent 3-week vacation across the mid-west from California very useful in finding gas, resturants, banks and national parks. During daytime use brighter colors and maps would be easier to read. Overall I found the unit very helpful when traveling and would recomment it to a friend.
Was Impressed For the Most Part September 22, 2008 We recently used the Magellan Maestro 4250 on a trip to the Midwest. My husband named her "Vicky". For the most part, the Magellan worked flawlessly unless my husband would try and get "Vicky" flustered by making several very fast turns.
I was slightly disappointed that the unit was shipped with the 2007 map instead of the updated 2008/2009 map. I guess it would have been less annoying had it stated that I was purchasing a unit with an outdated map. The first address, I tried, was my daughter's as she lives in a fairly new house and the Magellan would take me to an area east of her house. By scrolling I could get to her neighborhood but then it showed her street as the last one in the subdivsion, when in reality there are and have been for some time several more streets as her house is over 3 years old.
But all in all, I am happy with my purchase. It's not the perfect GPS but I seriously doubt, that there will ever be one. It sure beats getting lost.
