5 out of 5 stars Good if you get it cheap...   April 25, 2005

Updated 2006

The Garmin ique m5 pocketpc/gps is a gadget lover's dream come
true. However this is 2003 technology and newer gps units are
a lot bettter these days with the new SIRF chips and 3d naviation available on Garmin m3 and c340 devices.

I will not recommend buying this device for $400. If you still plan to buy this...read on ..esp the part about getting an external antenna.

The bundled software includes garmin map software for entire
united states and Microsoft outlook 2002.
Setup was easy. I was able to install the Map source software
without any problems. Garmin provides a usb based sync cable and
cradle.

The automount is a second cradle which mounts on the windshield
via a suction cup. The suction cup mechanism was very sturdy but
lot of people report problems with the suction cup and it is
illegal in CA. So stick with a bean bag mount ($$).

Driving directions are provided via an external speaker
attached to the car charger. Sound was loud and clear.
The m5 has a built in speaker which has decent drive.
The battery looks to be of a replacable type.

The device comes with one slot for SD card. Onboard memory is around 60MB. Spend $50 and get a 1GB card...otherwise you wont
be able to use this device.

I would recommend all users to download the latest garmin software from their website. Even with this you will endup with
lost satellites. If you get an external gps antenna (glisson or garmin - $50 ) this problem will get fixed.

Couple of caveats...

This sofware is defenitely not user friendly.
The map sofware takes up 3GB on my HD.
You need to shell out $100 for 1GB sd card and external gps
antenna to make this device truly workable.

I had made a trip to New York , DC, (Niagara falls) Canada
with this device and it worked well thanx mainly to the external
antenna, the beanbag mount and my 1GB sd card.

2 out of 5 stars Buy if you want to be on the bleeding edge   March 27, 2005

I like garmin products. Seems support for this one is a bit dicey.

Pro's - It's a garmin. Most of their products are great, and their mapping software is good.

Con's - Bluetooth. Doesn't appear it works with much. Garmin tech support admits it doesn't work with any keyboard or headset. They don't admit to what it DOES work with. Seems they are relying on users to discover that. Documentation can be a bit sketchy too. Again, relying on users to find and report the bugs. If want to pay a lot for bleeding edge technology, this is it.

I've been a long-time handheld GPS user. I've never had much use for a PDA, but when I discovered the Garmin iQue series, I was interested. I didn't buy the 3200 or the 3600 mainly because of the internal battery that could not be replaced.
I read as much about the M5 as I could, before I decided to make the plunge. I even read the on-line manuals, to ensure that I was getting the functionality I've hoped for.

My M5 arrived on Monday and I've had a couple days to play with it. So far, it's been a kick to play with. I actually like the auto mount. It seems sturdy and functional. The speaker is certainly loud enough to hear over road noise.

The iQue Routing SW has been interesting, albeit a little inconsistent in where it routes you. I sometimes have to select "via points" to get routed on the road that I want.
Once you get a valid route and destination in the system, it would be tough to get lost.

Pluses: GPS seems much more accurate than previous handhelds I've used. I can even get a signal indoors through the roof.

Que Route, Que Trip and Que Find add a new dimension to using a GPS device.

Minuses: I picked one up for $599, and even that is expensive.
The LCD screen is difficult to see in the daytime, even at full backlight. I'd like to see more memory come standard with the unit.

Overall I think it's great. Operation is intuitive, it only took me a few hours to learn to use. I'm happy with it.

3 out of 5 stars NEEDS WORK!!!   February 27, 2005

Overall, I would give this device a 3.5 stars.

Pros
1. Display is larger than most handheld GPS, which is nice.
2. You can find most of your point of interests, though it does not contain the nursery that I go to often.
3. Speaker on included car adapter works well and the voice is clear.
4. GPS is one of those useful gadgets, adding PDA makes it even better.
5. Good battery life.
6. Lots of other goodies like playing mp3 and bluetooth.

Cons
1. Lost GPS capability once and had to do a reset.
2. It gets you there but routing can be way off. With all avoidances unchecked and fastest time chosen, it consistently gave me MUCH longer routes and time. A trip that should only include going on ONE freeway, M5 routes a total of THREE freeways, making a 17 mile trip into 24 miles!
3. Device have been inexplicably locked up; unable to use GPS from time to time except for this last time. Device was reset. Received "out of memory" error when tried to open Garmin apps after reset. Downloaded "fix" v2.50; fix app does not run. GPS right now USELESS until Garmin comes up with another "fix".
4. Business addresses can be totally incorrect, for example, listings a Church's Fried Chicken and Papa John's pizza were about two miles off and the streets and numbers don't even come close!
5. Totally not user friendly.
6. Screen can be insensitive, requiring multiple taps.
7. Expensive.
8. Windshield mount is almost a joke; should have included friction mount instead. Most vehicles have fairly slanted windshields, which would be a hassle mounting the M5 and also would potentially block your view of the road. Besides, it's illegal to mount stuffs on your windshield in CA.
9. Acquiring satellites can be slow; you can be a few miles from home before getting a signal.
10. Cover flap attachment is poorly design which partially block the adapter connection. Snapping in the device may cause a mild shock, which may reset your device.
