The true next generation of video games ... November 20, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
PS3 and Wii are both viewed as next generation, but although the PS3 has better graphics and more processing power, there is no doubt that the Wii is truly the revolutionary of the two. I had extremely high expectations for the Wii after reading about it and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. I want to make it clear I am no Nintendo fanboy or even an avid gamer - the last system of any kind I purchused was the SNES and my daughter did get a PS2 a few years ago which I have probably played twice, but I've never even played a Gamecube. I can tell you though, in fun factor, this system is absolutely unbeleivable. Within an hour of hooking it up, my five year old and fifteen year old daughter were boxing on Wii sports, and what blew me away is I watched my five year old beat my fifteen year old for two hours straight. The fact that we could all pick up the system, figure out the controllers, and be having a blast in no time was amazing to me. No, the motion detection is not absolutely perfect, but you quickly learn and get around the nuances - they are no barrier to fun. The old school games available through the Virtual Console and the Gamecube compatibility are also awesome. Now I can go back and play some of the games I missed without investing in multiple system. For thise of you who have drifted away from home video games, I have some advice for you - its time to come back.
Fun Factor November 20, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Must have for people of all ages. I waited in line at target for this hot item sharing stores and expectations for this machine for a long time. I unboxed it Sunday morning and hooked everything up which was very simple. My older brother who isn't to much into games was watching and asked the question "why did you buy this when you have an Xbox 360?" I explained to him, this system is all about fun, its new its innovative and believe me man when you see it you will see why I got the wii. I turned everything on and did the initial setup and popped in wii sports. I chose baseball and I've never scene my older brother freak out when he saw me act like I was up to bat and the guy on screen did everything I did. It was amazing my family was stunned video games has gotten to this level.
For a while it was tuff to get the family to understand the Xbox or the playstation with its "tuff for non-gamer" controls but the wii, its above easy to pick it, it almost comes natural.
Zelda was the next game to try and WOW I loved every second of it, from fishing to riding a horse, it was amazing. My inner child was screaming out loud. Next was red steal and that was great. It took some getting use to never have I played a first person shooter like that but never the less it was great. After that I played some Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi 2, and it was completely reshaped for the wii. You play as it was a boxing game and the other player is in front of you, which one feature I found great was to do some of the moves you act them out with the controller which was very very sweet. Last thing I tried was putting in Super Smash Bros Melee which I picked up from Wal-Mart very cheap with some game cube controllers and a memory card. I popped it and kicked some but with my Mario.
To sum up this, its all about the Fun factor for me, and the wii delvers.
Alll video game no filler November 20, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love the playstation and the xbox but I think Nintendo is a little better because they focus on the issue at hand, THE VIDEO GAME. Nintendo will make sure that you get a great system, awesome graphics, and most importantly it is affordable. Due to the fact the system is just a video game and doesn't have a dvd player, or the other fancy things the other systems have, helps to keep the system affordable to those that can't drop $600 to $800 for one of the other systems. There are a few good titles that the wii has now, like Zelda, and Red steel. Once more games are released this system is going to be even better. It is kind of weird getting used to the new controllers, but once you do the games are a blast.
I had to take this away from my MOM November 20, 2006 38 out of 54 found this review helpful
I took the Wii over to my parents house today after they kept picking fun at me for heading out at 5am on Sunday morning to get in line at the local target/bestbuy. My mother (age 65) has never played one of my videogame systems went nuts over the bowling game then promptly called my nieces(22 @ 20)in to play. After two hours of play I had to take the game system away from them so I could go pick up my son from school. My father had been watching everyone play and I looked at him and said nintendo stock had been going up recently. He just rolled his eyes and said yeah no crap (censored). Graphics might not be the top of the world but the gameplay is great. I've already gotten my moneys worth out of the console in the wonderful afternoon spent together with family.
Great Fun but Accessories can be Frustrating November 20, 2006 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
My husband and I were at our local vendor at 11:30 waiting for our pre-order and finally went to sleep (me earlier than him!) by 3 am. We had highly anticipated this system and we were not disappointed.
The setup of the system itself was fairly simple and straightforward. We discovered quickly that even just setting up the Mii's (your individual "character" for such games as WiiSports) was already entertaining as you selected hair color, height etc, reminded me of the Sims but on a simpler level.
We first began with WiiSports since it came with the system and within 10-15 minutes could easily use the controllers especially on tennis and bowling. I was surprised at how involved your whole body was in playing these games. For example, when bowling you really have to do the motion (leg involvement and all) of bowling to get a good hit.
For launch we also purchased Zelda and Call of Duty 3. They graphics and sound on both are amazing but since we only played them briefly I won't review them further here. The games could have looked 10x better if Nintendo had bothered to release/produce the component cables. We have an impressive TV but without the component cables you could definitely sense you were missing the crispness of the graphics.
The only cons I will say are: 1-the sensor bar that you have to attach so the wireless wii-mote will work was a bit frustrating. This was largely due to the fact that we have cats and they kept walking in front of it. I hope we can find a better area to attach it to. 2-Accessories. As noted, no component cables available, very difficult to get additional controls, and the additional controllers can start running up the bucks!!!!
This is a wonderful system that could be for the whole family. We can't wait to take it with us on Thanksgiving to have everyone play. I hope more are made available soon as the game selection is much more versatile then other systems on the market and this system, in general, will be playable by a large market base.
ENJOY!!!!
