4 out of 5 stars The remote is what makes it worth the buy.   March 2, 2007

5 out of 5 stars Review Based on Value   March 2, 2007

A lot of the reviews for Wii Play are pretty spot on when compared to a regular Wii game, but I don't think it's fair to compare it to a regular game. When you buy Wii Play, you basically get a remote (worth $40) along with the game, so the dispositive question is whether Wii Play is a worthy $10 game.

I would answer that with a resounding YES. It clearly looks and feels like a technical demo for the Nintendo Wii, but again, it's a $10 game. If you're into minigames of the type you'd play in Mario Party or Wario Ware, Wii Play is your cup of tea. You get 9 mini games:

Shooting Range - basically duck hunt. Everybody loves duck hunt, right? It works surprisingly well with the Wii remote. Both single-player and multi-player are pretty fun.
Find Mii - basically Where's Waldo. There's a clutter of Mii's (people) on screen and you have to find a pair that match, or a particular Mii, etc. 2-player mode basically awards points to the first person who finds the Mii. Also fun in single-player and multi-player modes.
Ping Pong - control the paddle with the on-screen wii-mote pointer. Not really that fun, you don't actually use any motions like in tennis, you just direct the paddle on-screen to where the ball is. It's actually quite similar to the pong/air hockey game.
Pong/Air hockey - similar to Ping Pong in concept, you control your paddle on screen with the wii-mote and try to score the puck into your opponent's goal. Not that great single player, but pretty fun multiplayer since it's a little more frantic than ping pong.
Bubbles - guide shapes into bubbles to pop them. IMO, the worst game of the bunch. It's basically a reflex game, where you take three shapes and try to fit them into slots by directing and rotating with the wii-mote.
Billiards - Pretty fun single player or multiplayer. A standard pool game.
Fishing - Similar to the mechanical board game where you try to stick you fishing pole magnet into the fish's mouth. Kinda fun for awhile.
Cow Racing - Pretty fun, shows off how the wii-mote can be used to drive and steer.
Tank - Steer a tank around and lay mines or shoot shells. It probably has the least amount of wii-mote interactivity (you point on screen to aim your shots, that's about it, everything else is standard console controls). Lots of people seem to like this one, I didn't so much.

Anyways, bottom line is that it's $10. And it's totally worth the $10.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it if you need an extra remote   March 1, 2007

The main reason I got this was I wanted another remote and I figured a few small games for a couple of bucks over the price of the controller wasn't too bad.

They're short, fun and entertaining, but that's it, nothing wow about em.

I fully support the idea of this game. In actual gameplay it is kind of lame.
Cow racing & billiards are lots of fun. Pose your Mii and fishing are a waste of space. Ping-pong is confusingly difficult to work. Tanks!, find you mii, laser hockey, and shooting gallery are ok.
So the justification is a 40$ controller + game = worthwhile. I disagree. Even the games that I like are so very, very shallow that they only have multiplayer value. I loved the cow racing, but the one course, for the same length of time gets real old. Billiards is fun, so why is it only 9 ball and no other kinds of billiards? What about even a slightly different set of rules for any of these games, change the length of time for example? Nope - not possible.
Wii Sports has 3 great minigames and one stinker. Play easily has more bad than good. A great minigame? Maybe, but at least a few times a week I'll be playing Wii Sports, not this. Unfortunately the lack of depth shows after a short while.
This had a lot of potential, but the games are skeletons of what should have been. If they released a more fleshed out version of this it would be worthwhile. Now its value is in a "free" controller.

Oh and also only two players? WTF? Only laser hockey & ping-pong need to be two players, the rest could easily be 4 players at once.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and Short - But Certainly Made Me Smile!   February 28, 2007

While I certainly would not have shelled out $50 for wii play without the remote, for the $10 above the cost of a wiimote, this game is a great novelty and really demonstrates the innovative nature of the wii and gets me excited for for the future.

This arrived today at work from Amazon - and I played it on my 1 hour lunch break at home - which was ample time to try each game and go round too on the shooting.

I do think overall it is fun and stands on its own. The key to the game is to have enough miis made. Finding my sister, wife, and mom in find mii was pretty funny. Watching them dance around the title screen is pretty amusing as well.

Here are my quick thoughts on each game:

1. Shooting - Short - but lots of fun. Definitely repeatable.
2. Find Mii - actually pretty clever - you start finding people yielding a flashlight in a dark room after a few rounds. Definitely better if you have created some miis.
3. Ping Pong - not much fun in my opinion - a little overly simplistic
4. Air Hockey - Actually kind of fun - strong nostalgia factor a la atari pong
5. Bubble Burst - I does hurt your wrist a bit, but very different from any game I have ever played - looking forward to 2 player here
6. Billiards - Probably the most challenging - I think it will have a longer lifespan than the others
7. Cow Riding - By far the zaniest, the controls are really unique and engaging
8. Tank - Lots of Atari Nostalgia. Could definitely see myself playing this one more
9. Fishing - pretty lame - If you have Zelda: Twilight princess - you will see what fishing on the Wii should really be like!
