Brief Review: Nintendo Scores Big Again June 17, 2006 24 out of 27 found this review helpful
Usually when a company produces a "new and improved" version of a product, there's no need to invest excitement, but for those of you who are already big fans of the Nintendo DS, the DS Lite is a brilliant handheld gaming device. I highly recommend that you upgrade to the DS Lite. For those of you who are considering the DS for the first time, I hope the following summary is of help to you in your decision. Here is a brief rundown of my pros and cons:
Pros:
1. Highly attractive look. 2. Smaller and more streamlined design gives more control while gaming. The old DS is a bit bulky. 3. Power button is no longer a button. It is now conveniently a switch on the side. 4. Stylus slot is now on the side instead of on the top. Much more convenient! 5. Microphone is now between the two screens instead of at the bottom. Very smart improvement. 6. Four levels of brightness. This is probably the most needed improvement. With the old DS, playing in well-lit areas (i.e., outside) was nearly impossible. The DS Lite's screen provides as much or as little brightness as necessary depending on your particular situation. This improvement was the deciding factor for me in choosing to upgrade from my first-generation DS. 7. The new higher-quality DS screen helps the graphics to look sharper and crisper.
Cons:
1. Brightness levels can only be changed from the configuration screen. If you're in the middle of a game, there is no external brightness adjustment. 2. The exterior of the new DS is gorgeous, but the resin-like coating means easy smudging of the external case. This will be slightly annoying for those of you who are prone to sweaty palms. 3. Still no support for old Gameboy games. There is still, of course, Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Advance SP support just as there was with the first-generation DS.
The DS Lite really is a brilliant device. Nintendo could hardly have done a better job. If you are looking for a great way to kill time and/or experience great handheld gaming, I highly recommend the DS. With so many hundreds of great titles available (when including Gameboy Advance games), a reasonable price, and such a solidly designed gaming device, you will not be disappointed.
I highly recommend this product.
liter then air June 16, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have been playing my son's DS for a while now; he has Animal Crossing and we have fun with it. I just got the Lite today and have been playing Brain Age - clever program. The feel of the lite is much nicer; the screen easier to read by my old eyes. Its a well designed system; I found the touch screen and HR recognition great (much better then my daughter's Leapster. I don't think the microphone sound recognition is that great. I'm in a somewhat quiet room - a little white noise from my AC and computer. It didn't understand the word BLUE very well. The system is a great toy and fun fiddle.

the sleek ds lite June 16, 2006 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I got my ds lite the day it came out and I previously owned a psp not the original ds but i have played my friends' original one. The ds lite is sleeker, smaller(but not to small), less akward, and my hands feel more comfortable playing it. Other than that it is still the same system inside. I play my ds everyday and rarely played my psp when i had it. I like how the ds lite folds up perfectly unlike the old ds. I love the games for the ds! P.S.... at least where i live the ds lite is sold out at every game store so i got mine at toys r us. just an idea.
Great for adults too. June 15, 2006 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I don't usually write reviews but I'm in love with this little machine so was motivated to make a recommendation.
My six year old son loves his nintendo gameboy and has been saving up for a ds. Once we found out a new lite version was coming out, we decided to wait for the release to get one for him.
Once I saw his, I had to get one of my own.
The screen is so bright, the graphics so much better than what you've seen before on a gameboy. But the best part of all is all the new games that are aimed at people like me.
I love the Brain Age and the Big Brain Academy. I'm currently immersed in Trace Memory with Trauma: Under the Knife waiting in the wings.
Its about time the market tried to capture the non hardcore gamer like me.
I'm terrible with buttons, the coordination to do attacks etc. on regular games is, for the most part, beyond me.
But, the stylus. THIS I can manage.
So if you've ever had an interest in a portable gaming system but been intimidated by all the buttons, or turned off by the game selection..then consider the Nintendo DS lite.
I love it !!!
