5 out of 5 stars whoa...   December 25, 2007

Last year just before Christmas, my launch day 360 died from the infamous red rings of death. While I did get a replacement unit which worked well, I never forgot how disappointed I was with Microsoft. and I promised myself to buy a PS3 by the end of 2007.

Today is Christmas 2007, and I am a very proud owner of the 40 GB PS3!

The setup process was very easy, I simply plugged in my hdmi cable (I work at Best Buy, so I used my employee discount to get a good Monster cable. I say it was more than worth the money!), ethernet and ac power cord. What shocks me still is just how much more quieter the PS3 is compared to the 360's jet engine noise. I can barely pick up the hard drive spinning, and the blu-ray disc drive is almost sleath silent. Setting up my PSN account was super easy, and I was online in no time at all.

My main use for the PS3 will be for watching blu-ray and standard dvds. Whoa!!! I had only planned on watching Spiderman 3 for 10 mins, only to be enjoying the super sharp picture and sound at 1080i. My next tv will support 1080p, so my viewing experience will only improve.

Oh, and the games? Let's just say that Blockbuster will be seeing me rent alot of PS3 games this weekend! sony built this machine to last, and it shows in so many ways! I'll never consider any M$ game console ever again!!!

2 out of 5 stars Careful! The 40GB version NOT backward compatible   December 25, 2007

If you look really hard in the descriptions and reviews, you can find that the 40GB version of the PS3 is NOT backward compatible with PS2 games. Neither Sony nor Amazon go out of their way to inform the casual buyer of this important fact. After more than a year of reading that the PS3 would play PS2 games, to introduce a version without compatibility, and then not inform customers with an OBVIOUS warning is pretty low, as far as I'm concerned. A normal person would assume that the price difference between the 80GB and the 40GB was primarily due to the different sized hard drive, and not removing major features.

Backward compatibility was a VERY important feature to me, and finding out that the 40B wasn't was a major disappointment on Christmas morning. At least Amazon will take this unit back for a full refund, but a more obvious warning about this issue in their product description would have saved a lot of grief.

The 80GB version has reasonable PS2 compatibility, although not as good as the original 20GB/60GB versions. Otherwise, the PS3 is very nice, as you can read in other reviews. I just wanted to try to help people be aware of this major difference in the 40GB version.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelivable!! High end user's console comes out cheaper than 360!   December 25, 2007

I must admit that previously before owning a PS3, I very skeptical due to the hype and me being a devoted Xbox 360 Fanboy, but after receiving this console as a gift from my lovely wife, I realize what this system is capable of.

The PS3 may lack the quantity and quality of games compared to the Wii and especially the 360, but overall it is a powerful home entertainment system with it's ability to play high def movies courtesy of the Blue Ray drive (the 360 HD-DVD add on is $179.00)it has a built in Wi-Fi for playing online as well as an internet browser (360's adapter costs $99.99 and the Xbox live subscription is $50 per year!!!) and the ability to not just stream videos from your PC, but copy them straight to the hard drive disk and the photo slide show is very user friendly with the option of using your favorite pics as a theme/main page. (360 is uncapable of doing those.)and the friggin thing runs quiet unlike the jet engine sounds of th xbox 360..no red lights of eath to worry about either.

If there are any gripes regarding the PS3, it would have to be the lack of exclusive games and killer apps compared to MS' 360's Halo 3,Bioshock and Gears of War. But Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, and of course Metal Gear Solid 4 are signs of good things to come. I still love 360's ability to play custom soundtracks and the vibration feature which Sony sorely lacks. wuth the amount of storage data from the Blu-ray disc, the potentual is limitless as developers are starting to utilize the most of this format.

All in all you can't go wrong with this purchase which is more cost effective than Xbox's 360 Elite. (more storage and the system is black.WHOOPIEEE!!)Do the math kiddies.

5 out of 5 stars A gift for my bro   December 24, 2007

I bought this for my brother as a Christmas present. Since I wasn't sure if I would see him on Christmas, I decided to give it to him early. I have to say even though I knew all of the specs before it was powered up I was still blown away by the whole package. Also very impressive was the ease of which we had connected to the internet. Within a few seconds we were watching "Chocolate Rain" on youtube, watching videos streamed off of the home pc, and watching a slideshow of Christmas pictures from last year. My brother has very strict videogame tastes so I didn't bother to buy him a game, for fear of getting him something he wouldn't like. No problem, we just connected to the Playstation Network (after establishing an account) and downloaded free demos for Skate, NCAA Football 2008, Heavenly Sword, The Simpsons, Conan, and Stranglehold, and others. Honestly, the downloads took a little longer than I hoped they would, but it's not a deal breaker. We took turns trying out the games with the SIXAXIS controller. The controller is lightweight, maybe even too much so, but it is very easy on the wrists. The tilting aspect on certain games is fun for some, but others kind of tedious (I feel the same way about the Wii).

In conclusion, the Playstation 3 40G model is a great buy for anybody. I plan on getting a 80G for myself in the future, but you really can't go wrong with either one. In fact, I like it so much, I have asked for a 80G version for myself for Christmas!!!
