HD DVD is dead! It's finally time to buy a PS3! February 17, 2008 7 out of 16 found this review helpful
I have been dying to buy a PS3,but with HD DVD i was not ready to spend this much money on a gamble...but with todays news the time has finally come!
http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSL1643184420080217
TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research), a company source said on Saturday.
The move will likely put an end to a battle that has gone on for several years between consortiums led by Toshiba and Sony vying to set the standard for the next-generation DVD and compatible video equipment.
The format war, often compared to the Betamax-VHS battle in the 1980s, has confused consumers unsure of which DVD or player to buy, slowing the development what is expected to be a multibillion dollar high definition DVD industry.
Toshiba's cause has suffered several setbacks in recent weeks including Friday's announcement by U.S. retailing giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) that it would abandon the HD DVD format and only stock its shelves with Blu-ray movies.
A source at Toshiba confirmed an earlier report by public broadcaster NHK that it was getting ready to pull the plug.
"We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business," said the source, who asked not to be identified. He added that an official announcement could come as early as next week.
No one answered the phone at Toshiba's public relations office in Tokyo.
NHK said Toshiba would suffer losses running to tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) to scrap production of HD DVD players and recorders and other steps to withdraw from the business.
Blu-ray wins!! PS3 will upgrade with newer versions! February 16, 2008 11 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is a great unit, with amazing graphics. Hands down. I agree with the many 5 star reviewers here but wanted to add some comments about the blu-ray playing capabilities of the PS3...
Recent news has revealed that Toshiba, creator of HD DVD will back down from this media war (most movie studios and now even Walmart are making the switch exclusively to Blu-ray). This is great news for anyone looking to buy this unit.
Others have commented that even if you have a blu-ray player, later versions (ie 1.1,2.0) may make it obsolete. Your player will require a hard drive (1G of space for v2.0) and internet connectability to use the new features. Well, this is exactly what the PS3 is, pretty much the only blu-ray player you can buy confidently.
So, not only are you getting the top gaming console, you are also getting an upgradable blu-ray player. Very nice.
Sony PS3 February 15, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have only purchased one (downloaded) game to try it out (bowling). And I haven't really played with it. I bought the system for its Blu-Ray DVD player to watch HD movies on my Sharp 1080p TV. Works great & does a wonderful job on regular DVDs as well. I'm also setting it up to play videos from my home network -- that's definitely a techie challenge, not for the feint of heart. More a hobbiest thing than utilitarian.
40GB Playstation 3 February 15, 2008 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
I didn't know that you couldn't play your old PS2 games on the 40GB Playstation 3. I could have returned it and got the 80GB model but I am only a part time gamer. A game must really grasp my attention to make me buy it and play it. The Blu-Ray player is awesome.
Rock-solid Blu-ray performance ! ! ! February 15, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I mainly got the PS3 for it's Blu-ray DVD capability. Many other conventional players seem to require periodic updates to play new releases as they come out. The only firmware updates the PS3 needs are strictly for adding new features. I've had it for over a month now and thrown a bunch of newly released Netflix bluray dvd's at it with absolutely no "issues" whatsoever. Fantabulous picture quality and audio! Using the supplied controller as the remote takes a little getting used to, but it does the job. I found no need to get Sony's regular remote (although it's only 20 bucks if you want one). Whisper quiet fan is inaudible unless you're about 12 inches away. The built in wireless internet receptor is an added bonus. SD DVD performance is also top notch because of the excellent upscaler used in the player. This is definitely a dependable unit even if, like me, your not much of a gamer. Overall, none of the headaches I've read about with other players in various user forums. Hurry up and buy one before the price goes down!
