More of the same, but that's not a bad thing. May 4, 2008 Mario Kart Wii really is just more of the same Mario Kart goodness. In fact, you'll even know some of the tracks. They've taken some of the better tracks from the other Mario Kart games and tossed them in.
The wheel is a great toss in, and is fun to play with, and the response is much more accurate than expected. Unfortunately, I do find it rather difficult to be competitive with the wheel. I personally would rather play Wiimote and nunchuck. But can you really complain about an extra $10-15 piece that they're just giving you with the game?
The online play is GREAT. A little hinky to figure out the first time (I don't read manuals... I should, but I don't) but after you've figured it out it's smooth sailing. The only thing you don't get from online that you get from racing in the same room is the trash talk from your competitors. I miss it, you may not.
In all, this is a worthy heir to the Mario Kart throne, and a must have Wii game. Put it on your list.
Sheer Fun! May 4, 2008 I've read quite a few of the reviews so far and some of them scared me. Now that I have the game I feel that some of the points people raised could be clarified on. No FFA Battle Mode - Agree 0% This "missing feature" scared me more than any other. You have to select the `Rules' button (top right corner) and set computers to None. So the feature IS there, but I can see how people would miss it since the icon is small and the other two selections are big and glaring. In addition to FFA offline, you can also have FFA Battle Mode online with friends. The addition of the Teams feature is a great idea, but I don't like how they implemented it. It feels forced. Shame you can't turn off the Time Limit feature.
No Multi-Player GP Mode - Agree 100% Sad but true. =( You can still race with just a friend 1on1 or FFA versus all the CPUs. So technically you can do the same stuff, you just won't be earning all the karts and characters together ...which stinks. If you like that feeling, some of the Karts and Characters are only offered by completing a set number of Time Trials so you and friends can compete on best times for a track and earn some Unlockables (Karts/Chars) at the same time. Also they added the feature of Teams so you and friends can all be on the same team racing or divide into separate teams.
Solo Player Sucks - Agree 0% I'm not seeing how long time fans are saying this. It's the same solo functionality with more added on like for example you can now solo play Battle Mode against the AI. You can also pick VS mode where you choose to play Solo or on Teams with the AI. On Vs Mode you pick the tracks you want to and the number of tracks (click Rules button). I played for 9hrs straight the night I got the game by myself. Still play solo at times, even though multiplayer is where its at.
Wii Wheel is a Gimmick - Agree 0% First time I played with it, I was flying off the track left and right and hated the thing. Best thing I can liken it to, is setting the sensitivity on your mouse higher than what you are used to. It's takes patience to adjust, but once you do you can't see yourself going back. I tried the Game Cube (GC) controller after I got used to the Wii Wheel and the GC controller felt like it seriously behind the power curve - it felt so pathetically slow in comparison.
Playing with Friends Online is Easy - Agree 20% Sorry, I love this game but whomever programmed the Friends section online needs a lesson on User Friendliness. When you do find a friend it feels like all you can do is used canned messages. I don't see any needed canned messages missed. But then you're like, "Oook, now how do we race???" Well to save you some time that my friend and I wasted... someone has to select the `CLOSE' button instead of the `Message' button. Ya, makes no sense.
Also, it's no where near as friendly as the Xbox 360 in hooking up with friends online. You need to exchange your Mario Kart Wii (MKW) Code with your friends - you can find this on the WFC Mode and then selecting `Friends' where it displays it under your Mii picture. Other thing I don't like is you can only have two people from your Wii Console connect online. You can still play up to 4 players on your Wii offline, but only 2 online from your console.
Since you can't talk on MKW you can't exchange your MKW Codes with others you found racing online which is a shame because there's been a couple racers I'd like to do that with. I guess this makes it safe for little kids so no one can stalk people but it sure would have been nice functionality to send friend invites to people.
Game is Cheap, No Skill is Required - Agree 15% If you notice the people who are saying this are the people who gave up on the game too quickly. This is a game anyone can pick up, play and have fun. It is also a game that rewards people for learning the game and becoming experts at it. When you hop online you'll see some people who are so good they're always a far margin ahead of the pack no matter how many Leader Shells (blue spiny shells) you see whiz by your head going after them.
I think the key difference is hardly anyone takes the time to practice on Time Trials. Time Trials is great because you can learn the track at your own pace without being pelted by weapons from other drivers. You can either choose to race against a ghost for that competitive spirit to beat out a time or completely solo. This is where you learn to do the expert tricks like snaking (drift boosts on straight-aways) and say drift boosting on a straight-away into a ramp, performing a mid-air trick so you land with a speed boost and landing into the middle of a hair-pin turn cuz you already started your drift.
Despite what others say you can avoid the Red Shells (use the INC noise to time your jump) by jumping over them. You can also avoid the POW Blocks by jumping right before the POW Block disappears. It's not easy but it wasn't always easy in the previous incarnations either. Just takes practice.
What I will agree with is I think the Bullet Bill power-up is over powered and I think it's what people are seeing on this so-called Rubber Band Effect. It's like the Star in where it makes you go extremely fast, but unlike the Star there is NO chance of falling off the road. Since the mini-map no longer shows people with power-ups on I'm thinking this what people are seeing when they see someone rocket up the track faster than they should be going. ("Rubber Band Effect")
When you first play this game you are flying off the track all the time barely surviving 50cc. Then you advance to 100cc and you wonder if you'll ever win. You do it, barely. Then you advance to 150cc where the learning curve feels like another gigantic leap. If you take the time to try 100cc again you'll find yourself flying through it wondering how you even had difficulty before. ALL the previous Mario Karts have been like this. The AI -is- much better than it was before but it's not cheap. Practice on Time Trials and you'll find no matter what power-ups the AI gets you'll still win.
Quick Tips
- Rabbit Start = holding the gas button somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd light. - You can do a rabbit start after you get fished from off a ledge - Learn to drift, love to drift, drift as much as you can. A well timed Power Slide can save you from being bumped off the road by a larger character or even pushing him off. - Learn to do tricks - a ramp before the finish line can easily put you from 3rd to 1st if the people ahead you don't take advantage of it. - Letting go of the gas button for a second to regain control can be a life saver - Watch the Replays - they just may reveal short-cuts you never would have seen without those camera angles.
I believe the new features and Fun Factor MORE than make up for its short comings.

I LOVE THAT THIS GAME HAS BABIES IN FACT 4 BABIES.THEY ARE BABY FORMS OF MARIO, LUIGI, PEACH, AND DAISY. THEY ARE ALL FAST. I LOVE THE NEW MARIO KART CHANNEL. THATS ALL.
Great game, but... May 4, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love nintendo, and I love my wii, but be aware that you will get pounded playing this game! Twelve characters each getting lightning, blue shells, and the new POW block mean you might do more spinning out that racing. A great game, but if you wanna go fast, you may want to check out the N64 version for download.
Very well done May 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this 1 day ago and today I couldn't stop playing it. It is a great game for multiplayer and the nintendo wfc mode. You can keep playing this game with all the new bikes, carts, and characters. The graphics are one of the best, and out of all the mariokart games, this is the best. The wheel in my opinion, makes it really fun. So far, there are no negative concepts in this game. The race action was adrenaline pumping, and you couldn't get enough of it. Nintendo really has done an excellent job on this game. There are lots of other types of gameplay like ghost races, tournaments, grand prix mode, time trials etc. This game can be challenging and at the same time easy and fun. Even though I am not a big Mario fan, I like the games but this stood out the most. Whoever out there, who is looking for a good game, get this one.
