4 out of 5 stars Dead Pixels   June 23, 2006
5 out of 13 found this review helpful

This gaming system is great. There is nothing new I can say about it that hasn't been said in the reviews before me. However, there is one tiny problem with my ds lite: dead pixels. It started out as one small pixel which permanently turned orange and never changed color again on the lower touch screen. As I continued to play with the ds, the "dead" areas increased so I had several more pixels which remained orange and refused to change color. Luckily, I purchased my ds at a store where I could return it within 90 days. I got a new ds lite and it has been perfect so far. But I just thought I would throw the dead pixel thing out there so you all would know.

1 out of 5 stars Top screen is not strudy - shattered in transit!   June 23, 2006

Received the unit a few days after June 12th release only to find that the top screen had been shattered in transit. It had a few spots on the screen that got bigger and bigger like a windshield crack. Called Nintendo they explained that the screen was shattered but, wanted $75.00 to repair it, Amazon offered to replace it but, will not deliver the item until end of August. Buyer beware, I've bought 6 or 7 gameboys for my kids since the original and they've been dropped, thrown and stepped on and never have they shattered a screen. I think this unit might be a little too sensitive for a child considering the cost of repair and/or the inconvenience of replacement. Not worth the waste.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice, only one drawback   June 22, 2006

I have just bought two of these for my sons. The DS Lite is a very nice form factor. The body seems sturdy and a good size for small hands. I also have no problem using it (ie. the size is okay for adults, also).

Pros: Very bright screen, very vivid colors (it looks like a video game ought to look, small, nice looking

Cons: The SP cartriges are not flush with the unit when inserted. They stick out about 1/3 inch. My youngest son has managed to jar the SP cartridge loose while playing a few times. This causes the game to freeze, and the cartridge has to be removed and reinserted with the device powered down. Game play is lost. This is not a huge problem, but I was surprised, because I never saw any photos of an SP game in the unit before buying (fyi, there is a photo of an SP game in the unit on the Amazon listing).

There is a small insert used to protect the SP slot when an SP cartridge is not in the machine. This thing looks good when it is in the DS Lite, but can easily be lost. We had an SP and a old DS before. We left games in the unit while storing to keep the cartridge from getting dust, lint, and debris in it. Now we have to remove the game before putting it in the case and return the protective cover.

This is not a huge complaint, but I thought people may like to know.

5 out of 5 stars Yes it's better than the first one   June 22, 2006

Okay since I posted a review for the New Super Mario Bros. I will add, This system is far better than the first, I know I have both. Don't expect the graphics to out beat the PSP but in terms of Nintendo products this is the best they have done.
Like it's predecessor it is not back-wards compatiable beyond the GameBoy Advance titles, However this one is a great improvement, gone are the hand cramps associated with the orginial DS the placement on the controls are smart like the power-on located on the out-side of the unit, battery life seems better (if not using the brightest setting) all the of the funtions and features of the first DS platform are on the DS Lite

However on mine I will add the touch screen seems less sensitive and I don't know for some reason I like the First DS System on games like Metroide Prime Hunters and Ridge Racer even though this system has a brighter screen, but for games like Mario Kart DS and The New Super Mario Bros. this is the one to use and the smaller unit (not screen) size helps too I can now put both my MP3 Player and DS system together in the orginal carring case, I'll be honest since I have purchased this system I have not been able to put it down! I actually prefer to carry the DS lite hand-held around more than the PSP because of it's size plus because of the size of the flash memory-card games you can carry way more games around than the PSP

My faviourt game for the DS by far is Mario Kart DS. I know there isn't much in the 3party support for this system only Nintendo and Namco are in my trusted list of publishers, everything else goes to PSP -- Yes I will admit it online ;-) I am a Nintendo fanatic.

Back to the DS Lite If your thinking whether or not it is worth it, it is - trust me, get rid of the old one and get this one -- just bare in mind there will probably be more color choices for the US market in the future, that in my opinion would be the only reason to wait.

Nintendo DS Lite review
By Tina Velgos, Managing Editor, and Tim Velgos, Game Testing Manager, The Review Zone.com

It's easy to be LITE! Hello, gorgeous! Nintendo DS Lite, that is. It's about time you got here. Join the party! This sleek, sassy, modern Wi-Fi gaming machine is the hottest thing in town. Forget about it being 90, or whatever hellish temperature it is outside! The DS Lite is the only ticket you'll need to party till the sun comes up!

The Nintendo Lite is heavy on features, lite in size! Slip into your favorite pocket, leave your PDA at home when you want to truly leave work at home, and get ready for the best portable gaming experience from Nintendo yet.

It's easy to get used to this skinny sensation. We took this puppy to the orthodontist's office and even the orthodontist turned his head (Though, he was an odd one so that vote might not count). Yep, this is spanking new and a sign of things to come. Skinny little gaming device that packs a hefty punch. KO delivery!

Turn it on, rev up the awesome color display and kick up your feet for hours! Selling at the MSRP of $129.95, this is a sweet treat for kids and grownups of all ages. Trying to share this device is hard to do because of you instantly love it. Caress it. Want it.

The Nintendo DS Lite is a serious improvement to the Nintendo DS. First of all, an improvement on the stylus makes a world of difference. The stylus is a bit thicker, for easy grip and fluent movements. The tip is also more rounded, making the accuracy nearly dead on.

The new components featured in the Nintendo DS Lite rock and roll. No need to crank out the user's guide, this is an intuitive gaming machine. High-quality stereo speakers to the twin backlit color liquid crystal LCD displays (the lower one is touch sensitive). Important stuff like Power Indicator LED light which changes color when you're power is on/off or low. Recharge your game and save it and you're off! The recharge light is orange, by the way. The only thing you might want to know is that if you already own a Nintendo DS normal, that charger is NOT compatible with the DS Lite.

A convenient side Power On/Off button is easy to use and located in the right position so that it doesn't easily get knocked on or off. Instead of the classic toggle on and toggle off, all you do is push the button up, the game turns on, and the button returns to the lower state. Thumb's up to Nintendo's creative wizards on this and so many other features that don't just work, they work exceptionally well.

Gamers will find the control buttons to their likings. Again, easy to use, easy to play, all the Nintendo way!

There's even a built-in microphone, a sliding volume control, headphone/microphone connectors (to connect external headphones and an external microphone), and more!

Sleek and sassy, this high-powered portable gaming system has Wi-Fi capabilities and is The Review Zone's two thumb's up winner for 2006! What Nintendo has done is taking a truly great product and has made it exceptionally charming! We can use the wireless to swap games, chat or play multiplayer games online thanks to the Wi-Fi Connection.

The lovely crisp 3D images have us sold on this product. You could compare the graphics to the old Nintendo 64 console; but a tad better. And the fact that it's on a portable device, instead of a game station! It's backwards compatible so you can play your old Game Boy Advance games in this unit.

Life doesn't get sweeter than Nintendo's DS Lite. So, buy it. Love it. Share it. And, play all your favorite games on it. This is the sleekest, portable gaming sensation to hit 2006. Nintendo, you've outdone yourselves! Big high fives!
