1 out of 5 stars Lexar Jump Drive - 128MB   April 19, 2004

Bought this thing approximately 2 months ago and it is dead. It no longer is recognized by any system's USB, and I have taken care not to damage the unit at any time.

It worked great for 2 months and was very easy to use both the public and private features. However, both are mute points when the system is dead.

I bought this item late January. Less than two months and it is dead. I have Windows 2000 and XP and after working good without any problems now it is not recognized by the either operating system. All the other devices work fine on the USB port. In the device manager I just get the yellow question mark with UNKNOWN DEVICE. Lexar Live support and tech support have not helped at all. I still have not got a reply from them. Now I cannot access some of my important information.
Good idea - back-up your media often if you own a USB drive. I thought the idea was to reduce the workload and need to use your memory on your p/c by having these drives but I have found that is not the case. Very disappointed.

A writer's worst nightmare - computer crashing and taking books, interviewers articles etc you have that are DO OR DIE. Well, in 5 years, I have collect 7 laptops and 3 PCs. I have the huge 200G for backup, but I really need something that is easy to use from machine.

I bought the mac Lexar Media 128 MB Jump Drive Package PD128-132 and the Lexar Media 256 MB JumpDrive Portable USB 2.0 Flash Drive. Both are very good. Please not the 256mb works on computers with 1.0 Flash Drives but at a reduced speed. My 1 1/2 Gateway only had 1.0, so that was a pain, but the rest have 2.0. They are cute see-through plastic, so the nightmare of backup and moving from computer to computer was solved - but then I envisioned the plastic melting or aliens munching on it - writers have imaginations you know!! So I saw that one. It is just as easy to us. XP people plug in and it will see it, couple clicks and you are using it. 98SE you need to install a drive.

This one is fatter than the 128 MB Jump Drive Package PD128-132. Since I am using laptops mostly, they work fine - plenty of room for side plugs. However, if space is a concern, you might want to go with the 128 MB Jump Drive Package PD128-132. It's thinner and narrower. However, if room is not a consideration, I would recommend this one. They are near the same price. This one is much more sturdy.

This one also comes with a security section, so that is an extra added plus if you need that.

Well, I bought this little thing to replace my zip disk (which was just a headache). And instead of bargaining online, I went to a store and bought it at a steep markup price. That aside, this thing truly is a nifty little gadget, but it's not without its drawbacks. Because of the security capability I bought this model over its skinnier competition, but this feature isn't all it's cracked up to be. The security program is pretty simple but in order to setup or access the secured part of the drive you need to install the program onto whatever machine you are using. This can be a real problem if you want to access your secured files from a public machine with security restrictions that prevent user installations. Another big drawback is its relative bulkiness, users may have trouble fitting it in USB ports next to other used ports.

On the plus side, the "PUBLIC" half of the drive (which is my entire drive now)is always available and it has seamlessly worked in every XP machine I've put it in to. XP simply detects and install it as an additional drive without any requirement from the user. (Go XP!) 98 users will have to DL the drivers and install, but this seems to be the status quo with all flash drives. Additionally, I haven't put it through much yet but it seems pretty durable.

Bottom Line: It works great and everyone should have one but I can't say I'd buy this exact model again.

5 out of 5 stars USB Jumpdrive a life saver   February 11, 2004

I recently picked this up on my visit to the states in Nov 2003.... I am now back working in Australia. I have found this little jumpdrive to be one of the most handy inventions/tools I have ever come across. I am currently working on a contract where I am using two laptops, not linked to each other, but on one I have to obtain screen dumps for a training system and somehow get the files across to the other computer, without a network link, without the ability to burn CD's and way too big to fit on a floppy. This sturdy little device is a life safer and has made life SIMPLE! Thank you for an excellent product.... just wish I could get my hands on more in Australia :-)
