Good device, but must have some patience to get it to work. June 27, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had reservations about buying this item especially after I had a chance to use a DVD burner/video recorder from Sony. But the price was a big consideration here.
I'll say right away that I have no regrets about getting Plextor's ConvertX PX-AV100U. The item does the job but you have to have patience to overcome some minor difficulties. I'll also say that my primary reason to buy this product was so that I can convert some of my PAL/NTSC VHS tapes to DVD.
Here is the list of what I had to deal with before I worked out the "process" that works well.
The setup of the driver, software (ULead Editing software only), and hooking things up went without any difficulties. The problems began when I wanted to run the software. After the launch the program would just simply hang and I had to do a "hard reboot" (pressing and holding the power button). Then it occurred to me that Plextor's item was conflicting with the video camera that I previously installed on my computer. Once I unhooked the video camera and restarted my computer, the ULead software began to work. Then, once inside ULead I needed to play with "Options" to get the video and sound capturing going from my VCR.
Once I had all that worked out the only proper way to begin your project is as follows:
1. Make sure you unhook any video cameras (this usually involves just unplugging the USB cord from computer) 2. Make sure your recorder is plugged in and boot your computer 3. Before you launch ULead, press "Play" button on a VCR (I believe this helps to push a signal that allows ULead to recognize that a project is about to begin. For some reason it would not work if did not press Play on the VCR). 4. When software starts, play with the "Options" and some settings to get the video and sound streaming from your VCR.
What I also found interesting is that my computer does not need any reboot after I finish a project. I recall that when I worked with WinDVD Creator I ALWAYS had to reboot after couple of hours of work.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
NEVER WORKED January 11, 2007 I tried everything on the installation manual, but I never could got an image
Great Hardware, Decent Software August 28, 2005 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
The actual unit itself is really really great, but the included SageTV Lite software is not very stable. Seemingly at random, it will just stop recording right in the middle of a show, usually after I've had it running for a day or so. I highly recommend this product, but the Java-based software should be restarted daily if you want to have reliable recording.
