3 out of 5 stars Beware of PC Universe!!!!   August 12, 2008

I bought this DVD writer from PC Universe recently thinking I get same kind of service from them as Amazon. Device works fine for CD and single layer DVDs but fails to write a double-layer DVD after about 20% write.

I contacted PC Universe within 30-day period, but they simply refused to allow an exchange or return. I was told to contact directly Sony.
I am never going to buy anything from PC Universe or any other seller on Amazon. Will buy only items directly sold by Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Wondeful Sony DVD burner!   August 7, 2008

My DVD drive on my laptop died on me recently and I've decided to look for a better external burner. After reading the reviews for this Sony DRX840U DVD burner, I decided to try it out.

Best purchase I've ever made!

Every CD/DVD I've burned so far came out perfect with no problems at all. The sony burner does get loud but it doesn't really bother me.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Reliable   July 15, 2008
I bought this burner to use with my laptop for burning dual layer DVD's. The burner in my laptop was painfully slow. This burner has proven fast and reliable - I've burned about 20 dvd's so far, with no coasters; of course, I am using reputable media as well (Verbatim).

5 out of 5 stars Works like a Charm   July 15, 2008

I have owned this drive for 7 months now and it has yet to fail me, no coasters! I use this drive with my Mac Pro (Jan 08 version) with Leopard and it burns to every type of medium I need. While some have griped that the software is not compatible with Mac, which is unfortunate, I did not buy this drive for the software. It would be great to add Toast for us Mac folks, but it's not a deal breaker.
I am buying a second one so that I can burn DVD-R with my old HP XP machine which has HP burners that will only burn to DVD+R. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes.

3 out of 5 stars Not completely Mac compatible   July 13, 2008

This CD/DVD drive/burner from SONY works great, and the drive looks good on my desk. Unfortunately it is not totally compatible with Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger). (It does ship with PC software.) At first I could not figure out how to open the Sony drawer on my Mac G5 Tower. The eject button on the keyboard opens only the internal CD/DVD drive. Eventually I found that iTunes has a preference setting to select the drive, and the eject button in iTunes will open the Sony drive. But this is inconvenient. I contacted Sony, and here is the reply:

"Sony bundles Nero Recording software for Windows with this unit. If you would like to use this drive on a MAC you will need to purchase MAC recording software. Please visit this website for 3rd party software information. [...]

Thus there may be a hidden expense if you are buying this drive for the Mac.

By the way, I did find another solution for opening the Sony drawer without having to buy new software for the Mac. With Automator, I used the "Run Shell Script" command to issue the command "drutil -drive usb tray open". Then I saved the workflow as an application. It works fine. With this solution, or the iTunes workaround, I am able to use the Sony CD/DVD burner with no trouble.
