Can't beat a Mac July 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First computer I owned was an Apple 2e, then switched to PC's. Three years ago a friend let me use his 17" "Apple G4 laptop, after a couple hours I was sold. I gave my daughter my PC and got an Apple laptop. Last month my son decided he wanted the laptop, so I decided on the 24" iMac and it's a powerhouse. I don't experience any glare from the screen as some others have mentioned, it's by far the best computer I have ever owned. The packaged software / operating system Leopard 10.5 is amazing and the ever increasing freeware / shareware is jumping by leaps and bounds. I use my old firewire external drive to save individual files as handy backups along with a USB external drive to use for my TimeMachine scheduled system backups. The two USB ports on the keyboard are nice feature to plug camera, GPS, iPod etc when you want a access point for specific hardware purpose and then want to get rid of the cord clutter. Spaces is another great feature, I use 4 virtual desktops with my setup - one for Internet, one for email accounts, one for utilities and the last for photography. Going from desktop to desktop is just a mouse click or key stroke away. Great machine with an outstanding display and Apple's reputation and name standing behind the iMac is a homerun.
Bigger is Better! Go for the Gusto! July 28, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think most everything great has been said about the new 24" iMac. I checked out all the reviews and was having trouble making up my mind.. go cheap and get a 20" or belly up to the bar go for the gusto of the new 24" iMac..
Well this time I went for the gusto and all I can say is "WOW" its faster than a speeding bullet(had an old g-4),takes up less space, no problem with glare here. Looks great on my desk, lights up the room, photo editing is a breeze..
You must be warned however, slide shows can be hypnotic and slows your production due to 3rd party interruptions!
When in doubt go for the gusto!
My first experience. July 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My first encounter with any Apple product took place on July 2, 2008, when the iMac arrived at my front door in a skinny box weighing about 35 pounds. I followed the 3 steps in the set up book and hit the power button.
From there you just follow the on screen directions. You will be up and running in minutes. Music, photos and videos are quite easy to import, organize and share. Much easier to learn and use than my old Windows XP Pro. The Apple Web Site and each application has it's own help and detailed instructions. Search for documents, photos, etc. is very fast as is browsing the internet and emailing.
Leopard includes many useful and unique tools however there is no word processing included. There are office programs that can be downloaded from a number of sites, some at no charge.
Gate's people will have to start thinking and work long and hard to come up with something that is as good as the Apple iMac.
iMac computer July 24, 2008 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I purchased an Apple iMac Desktop with 20" Display. Within two weeks, the computer crashed and could not be started up. Apple Care referred me to a local Apple store for repair. Because I had not purchased the computer directly from Apple, Apple gave me a choice: Contact Amazon and return the computer, or leave it at the Apple store for two weeks for repair. If I had purchased the computer directly from Apple, they would have replaced the computer on the spot. THIS WAS NOT AN AMAZON PROBLEM, it is an Apple policy problem and an Apple hardware problem. I wrote them about this unjust policy, but have not received a response from them. The computer was repaired, however all information on the computer was subject to compromise while in the Apple store for repair. Conclusion: I think this is an unfair policy by Apple....not only to me, but to Amazon. Amazon has always stood behind their products 100%. Apple could learn something from Amazon! I purchased the computer from Amazon because of a $75 rebate offer. In the future I would probably purchase the computer directly from Apple.
Why didn't we go to the Dark Side sooner? July 24, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Ok, long story short, our XP desktop blew a motherboard several weeks ago and we ended up deciding to head over to the Big Box Electronics Retailer to look at updating our home system. The folks at the BBER were very helpful and spent about an hour and a half with us as we shopped for a new computer. We did due diligence and looked at a host of different Vista-based systems with different configs, and then spent some time looking at the iMacs. The more we looked, the more we liked, and we ended up walking out of the store with this 24" iMac desktop.
Downsides? Very few. First off, this is not a cheap system. We got ours for about the same price that Amazon is asking, but at $1700.00+, it's a significant investment. Docs? You don't get much, just a slim booklet that covers the basics. The keyboard and mouse cords could stand some length. We had a small issue with the printer drivers that come preloaded onto the Mac OS (couldn't get our HP all-in-one to do anything but print, no scanner or copy functions, but a quick update had the fix). That's about it.
Upsides? Oh, man, where do I start? Set up was EXTREMELY easy. We took it out of the box, plugged it in, plugged the keyboard and mouse in, and away we went. The Mac OS is very intuitive and fun to use, the computer comes loaded with tons of cool software, and peripheral set-up and compatibility is outstanding. We don't have to worry about viruses when surfing, either, as there are very few active viruses that will attack a Mac. The 24" screen is just overwhelmingly sharp. The machine is quiet, too, a welcome break from the constant fan noise that came off of our old tower.
This is an elegantly designed system that would be perfect for families or anyone who desires a user-friendly (yet immensely powerful) home work/play station. I heartily recommend it if you can afford it. It's a decision that we'll not regret.
