This is the worst anti-virus suite ever May 18, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this anti virus software because a 30-day free trial version came preloaded on my HP laptop and it had performed well for me. However when I installed this upgrade which came in a sealed box, I started getting pop-up's of strange sites, mostly porn or dating services but a myriad of other sites as well. Anyway I got fed up with it and ended up getting a free copy of CA Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus Plus and that took care of the problem. Thanks for nothing Norton. This program should get zero stars in my opinion.
Meets expectations May 15, 2008 Install was improvement over the older versions. In the past after a fresh install I had to run live update 3-5 times to get all the patches -- typically with a reboot in between. With this version the install downloaded patches and there was only 1 live update for the latest virus definitions post intall.
Installed on 2 systems -- one was perfect. The 2nd system had a problem when clients tried to connect to the printer. The firewall was rejecting requests and client reported "Spooler service not running". After some debugging I determined it was due to the number (or type) of network interfaces on the system. I had vmware installed which had several virtual interfaces + firewire which MS will setup for TCP/IP even if they are not connected. All of these interfaces left the firewall confused, rather than fight with the configuration, I just disabled these interfaces leaving only the 'real' NIC and the problem was solved.
One little note for folks who haven't purchased the 3 pack before, when you activate the first machine, you activate the subscription for all 3. It's really 1 subscription for software you can load on 3 machines. I'm not complaining, pricing is better than 3 separate packages.
Amazon had a good deal and delivered it in a reasonable timeframe.
Happy with a side note. May 9, 2008 As always, Norton is a bit slow at start up (unless you want to pay more for the 360). This is a 3 user account. Loaded on 2 different machines with 2 different results of ease. I do have a 3rd computer, but it is a MAC and there is no exceptions from Norton. I did find it cheaper a few days afterward, but already had to return it once (shipped single user)and did not want to go through that again. However, Norton is still the best out there.
Slower than cold molasses, worse than a virus, intrusive May 3, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The difference is like day and night. One minute my laptop was performing fairly well for a 4+ year old machine, then with Norton (painfully long installation)it takes forever to open a web page, everything is unworkably slow and often freezes up. Maybe on newer PC's with excess speed and memory to spare it might not be so noticeable but why would you spend good money on computing power just to have it wasted by anti-virus software.
I gave it one star partly because Amazon doesn't allow zero or negative stars, and partly because Norton contributes to the nostalgia experience. It reminds me of the good ol'dial-up days, except maybe a little slower. Maybe Norton could add sound effects to imitate a dial-up modem.
Frequent pop-ups pester you to download updates, which are also slow, then you have to restart. My previous anti-virus was Windows Live OneCare which I gave up because it was expensive and pesky, but compared to Norton, OneCare was discreet and non-intrusive. Does Norton really think they are so important that PC users want a Norton tool bar reminding that "Fraud monitoring is on." Too bad Fraud monitoring didn't catch Norton masquerading as a utility. Aargh!
Error Free Upgrade May 1, 2008 This was an upgrade to NIS 2005. OS is Windows XP SP2. Absolutely no problems during the install, and after a month the system is operating well with no glitches (unlike w/NIS 2005). Boot up is much faster. User interface is not that complicated. I would recommend this update to previous users of Norton NIS.
