HARD TO USE and UNSTABLE May 22, 2008 Wow. The depths of how bad this product is defy easy description. I am a professional power-user of Word for 10+ years, and even with a separately purchased manual, it was incredibly hard to learn. Heaven help the non-technical person who just wants to write a letter, a student paper, or a business document, especially one who doesn't want to use Microsoft's hideous templates. Does anyone inside of Microsoft Corp really use those templates for a professional project or for their social groups??? Yikes. And then, wait for it... the classic Microsoft moment... and then THE WHOLE THING BLOWS UP. Simple search and replace and BOOM, all of your work is gone! This happened to me over and over with clean documents. It seems like you have to buy this product because it is the default. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS.
great software May 21, 2008 great software, runs like windows version, there is a learning curve from the earlier version of office 2002
Powerpoint 2008 is unbelievably buggy May 20, 2008 I'm a heavy Powerpoint user, who recently switched from Windows to Mac. At first, I continued using Powerpoint 2003, under Parallels. However, this was a somewhat cumbersome solution, so I thought I would try Powerpoint 2008 for the Mac. I am sorry to report that the experience has been terrible. Within the first week of use, I encountered literally dozens of bugs. Some of these bugs may be poor design decisions by Microsoft rather than actual bugs, but so poor that they effectively cripple the product for its intended use (at least for me).
Rather than clutter this review with the details, I have posted a detailed list of the bugs I have found on at Microsoft Discussion Groups. The URL is "http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.mac.office.powerpoint&tid=268c7286-7df3-4c33-a722-077fcd674a1c&cat=en_us_daf6a0da-8c15-478b-bdef-02f74bb0ec8a&lang=en&cr=us&sloc=&p=1"
Among the bugs I've found, perhaps the most severe is that Powerpoint changes the "Date Modified" of files, even if you only look at them, without making any changes. This makes it hard to keep track of when you have modified a presentation. (This bug affects only .ppt files, not .pptx files.) This bug is so severe that it's almost a show-stopper for me. It may drive me to either revert to Powerpoint 2003 or 2007 under Parallels or VMWare Fusion, or switch to Apple's Keynote package.
Reluctantly, I must agree with other reviewers that this software looks either like it hasn't been tested enough, or like Microsoft simply doesn't care about Mac users, or may even be trying to deliberately drive them off the Mac platform by releasing poor software.
(By the way, I have a Mac Pro with Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard), and I am running version 12.1.0 of Office for the Mac, i.e. including Service Pack 1.)

Not so sure.. May 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My wife uses this for work, she's a writer, and need the compatibility with other writers. I know other programs are fully compatible with Office documents, but this is what she felt comfortable with. Entourage and Word routinely lock up on her brand new macbook. Nothing else on her Mac causes her any problems. We've updated the software etc, but I guess this is just par for the course with Microsoft products.
I'm disappointed with Microsoft! May 18, 2008 I paid a lot of money for Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home & Student Edition. Some of the information I get is garbled, nothing even close to readable. Some of it works, but it should ALL work PERFECTLY!!!! Don't even get me started on VISTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
