AMT info too late in process March 6, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was disappointed when after entering a lot of deduction detail, TT informed me that my AMT would make all that work obsolete. It also changed the estimated amount due by thousands of dollars after all my hard work was done. Had it given me some AMT information early on - and it should have been able to do this because of my gross income, capital gains and dividends, and NYS tax filing, I could have avoided hours of labor. I am very unhappy about AMT - who wouldn't be, but now I transfer some of that unhappiness to TT who should have advised me about its impact much earlier in the data collection process. Otherwise, TT has been my filing s/w of choice since 1995 and I'll probably still use it in the future. I just feel bad about when in the filing process it informs the user about AMT impacts.
Finally just what I need March 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have used TurboTax since 2003, but as I've gotten into stock trading more frequently, logging stock transactions on a tax return has become increasingly more of a chore. I was dreading doing my taxes this year because I had so many short term sales last year. I was planning on having someone else do it this year, but then I noticed a review somewhere saying that this year you could download all transactions from your broker INCLUDING cost basis information which is usually a pain to report, especially with numerous wash sales. So I proceeded to buy this and when I got to the import step, I just needed to provide the login to my two accounts and it pulled in the transactions. At first I was worried, because it gave an error message saying it was unable to import cost basis information and that I would have to add that. That was the reason I had purchased this, so I was about to get quite angry. But then when I looked at what it had imported on the next couple screens, it DID have all my cost basis information, except for one item. So the error message could have been clearer to say only one item was missing information. But when I realized what it did for me, I was ecstatic. It saved me at least a couple hours of work in just the few seconds it took to do the import. Way to go TurboTax!
You should first check with your broker to make sure they support the TurboTax import feature. If they do, I highly recommend this product, especially if you have a lot of investment transactions.
TurboTax Premier March 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall, it is a great product and I wished I started using it years ago. On a few issues, there was some vagueness in the explanations and the customer support responses were just as vague. However, the problems were minimal as the greater majority of the explanations were clear and concise.
A decent product now ruined March 4, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
So, if you have very simple tax situation - Turbo Tax might work for you - but then if you have a very simple tax situation - you can probably do it yourself. Here's what happened to us... Having used Turbo Tax for at least 5 years now, we returned to an old favorite. The first indication of negative changes was the way in which services once a part of Deluxe seemed now to only exist in Premier. When we got the box home - we hit problems with downloading information. After an hour on hold - we reached Mumbai and were told that we were asking too much of Deluxe, that we would need to buy Premier, which we did. This was supposed to handle the large number of transactions we were trying to download. At home - the EXACT same problem. Obviously not only does Turbo Tax not have enough people staffing their call center, but they are incompetent. A second hour long wait (what happens is you first reach the completely stupid people who go through a pointless script recording your 'biodata' and then, when they can't solve your problem they connect you to a second 'technical support' office - here they are at least trying to solve your problem, but seem to know little about the software they sell), we reached another support person who after going back and forth with her manager told us that indeed Turbo Tax would not be able to handle our situation. We should call and speak to the refund department. Thanks!
Getting Worse As Time Goes By March 4, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've been a big fan of TurboTax, and have used the on-line version for years. I'm a CPA by trade, so I understand my taxes, but appreciate the automation that the software provides. Unfortunately, TurboTax has devolved into a model that assumes that all users are, as we say in these parts, "ascared" of their taxes. They "hide" most of the input screens and make it very difficult to get to the sections that you need. If you miss a question, which can be in an obscure place, you'll never get to the parts that you need. This year, I'm struggling with Form 5329. The Premier edition is supposed to support that form, but I can't find any place to enter the data related to my Excess Accumulation on an IRA. (I forgot to take a death distribution this year.) I've asked the on-line help, and received a non-answer answer from someone who obviously didn't understand the question. I'm trying again today. Wish me luck. There has to be a better way.
