5 out of 5 stars Easier to burn CD's than Windows Vista.   December 10, 2007
Great product to have if you have Windows Vista. The burning software works faster and better than the Vista Utility.

1 out of 5 stars Yuck, Many Problems   October 25, 2007

I can get this thing to work, but there are so many minor and medium problems, that it's one of the worst pieces of software on my machine.

Here are some examples:

1. When you choose a number of files to burn to CD, the beginning of the filename disappears. So, for example, if you have "My First File.wav" and "My Second File.wav", all you'll see is "File.wav" and "File.wav".

2. If you want to use two drives for making multiple CD copies, and you choose to make 5 copies, it will actually try to make 10 copies.

3. There's no option for copying from a CD image to a CD, although you can double click on the CD image file to get this done.

4. Operations occasionally fail for mysterious reasons.

5. The Normalize operation results in a buzzy, overloud track.

I think I could list 50 or problems like this.

1 out of 5 stars Dudware   October 23, 2007

I haven't found anything that works REAL well and a lot that it won't let you do.

3 out of 5 stars Not there yet.   September 30, 2007

I gave Nero 3 stars because it burns DVDs and CDs with ease.

I deducted two stars because all the other myriad of features are like wading through mud to use. Of course I could learn how to find features through repetition, but in my opinion for the price, it should be intuitive. This software reminds me of shareware from about 5 years ago or so when nicer graphical interfaces took precedence over usability.

The product boasts "now includes over 20 applications."
In order as listed in the booklet describing applications within Nero:

Nero Mobile: I like using Creative Zen's "My Pictures" feature on my Samsung PDA/Phone better which has faster syncing and nicer thumbnails and picture management. Nero Mobile is as cumbersome as the PC version.

Nero Home: Plays DVD, records and plays TV shows (given you have the right components: "TV tuner or video capture card for analog or digital DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-C, and ATSC recording, compatible with the BDA (Broadcast Driver Architecture) driver standard."). I like using Windows Media, TiVo, or my HP Laptop's DVD software better. All are easier to use and less invasive to my PC's system.

Nero Burning ROM7: Fabulous - in my opinion, the only reason to buy this software.

Nero Scout: Database for all PC media files. Invasive (necessary for an indexing software) and slows system. The worst part of this for example is it puts pictures in a different order than the directory structure you have set up on your PC. It treats the sub-directory pictures were in as a directory after indexing.

Nero Search: Slower than using Windows search feature. Can only find files indexed by Nero Scout.

Nero StartSmart: "Command center" software programmed to go get other Nero software (because they know it's hard for the user to find the feature they want). StartSmart is as poorly programmed as the other Nero software it's finding for you.

Nero Express: Simplified burning process for beginners. It holds the user's hand but in such a way as to feel like your being smothered and still can't get or do what it is you want to do easily. It also assumes the setup you want in the burning process.

They have excellent pdf help files on their website, as well they should since you'll need them to use the product.
