1 out of 5 stars Not a Stable Product   October 15, 2007

I had high expectations- I have now spent three days trying to get things working. Finally I got it working and the interface is not intutive. But I was willing to learn. Today(3rd day) I got a windows update for xml and suddenly the program will not even open... I've asked for a refund and I'm going to try adobe premier elements.
My advice is do not waste your time... And whatever you do backup your system before installing.

3 out of 5 stars Quality tools but s . . l . . o . . .w . . . in XP   October 15, 2007

This program took about 45 minutes to load on my two-year-old IBM laptop running XP. The computer not only meets the system requirements but also meets the recommended standards, so there shouldn't have been a problem. However, the review materials suggest that it was designed around Vista instead of XP, and that may explain its slowness.

This software has also proved to be a remarkable memory hog. I'm used to multitasking and switching between programs, and I just can't do that when using this product. It doesn't even swap well between its own features.

But that's enough complaining about the slowness - - how well does it let you manipulate sounds, pictures, and so on? To test this, I set myself two simple tasks: to set a slideshow to music, and to create a panorama out of several photos. The slideshow task was simple and menu-driven, and easy to do. The software imported the pictures and the music very slowly, and the project was slow to save, but it looked very nice when all done. However, I could have done the same thing in PowerPoint.

The second task also worked well, and was much more impressive. I had four pictures of a dune that I wanted to piece together. I had not originally taken them as a panorama, so the pictures had somewhat different focal lengths and exposures. Some overlapped a little, others a lot. The software has an automatic panorama tool that fit three of the four pictures together well. It was a little off on the last seam, but a "fine tune" tool allowed me to get it closer manually, and then the software finished the seam off. Some seams were easy, requiring only that the software identify "dune," "water," and "sky." However, I was particularly impressed by the more difficult seams, which required getting brown grass stitched together right, as well as an area of leafy shrubs. Very impressive.

The software also uses irregular stitches, so that there isn't a hard line between pictures. One of those seams more or less disappeared, and the others look OK, given the poor raw material that I gave the program.

Yet again, simple tasks were slow. It took me five minutes to save the panorama and then open it in the photo editor. The photo editor was also very intuitive and easy to use, and I was able to fiddle with the brightness and contrast of the resulting panorama. Those tasks, too, were slow to load, but sped up with use (presumably because of caching). Save times got down to 30-35 seconds, which is OK but slower than other software I've used.

All in all: I'm impressed by what it can do, and how well it can do it, but it's frustratingly slow. I'll use it for challenging projects and use simpler tools for routine ones.

5 out of 5 stars A continued evolution of the Roxio suite   October 15, 2007

I'm always a bit leery of Big Software: packages that try to do too much, install too many components, try to get their hooks set all over your system. So I was a bit leery installing the newest release of Roxio Easy Media Creator, which has been growing rapidly into bloat-ware in recent releases. It turned out that Ipleasantly surprised to find it more streamlined, cleaner, and professional-looking than previously.

Although one of the big "enhancements" in this release is Vista support, I tested this package on my Windows XP Pro machine, on which I was previously running Roxio Creator 9. I cleanly removed Creator 9 first since installing on top of an old version is always a bad idea, many software complaints seem to arise from not uninstalling the old software first. Install was straightforward if a bit slow to run on my Inpiron Dual Core system.

My primary purpose in buying Roxio, like many of you, is to create media. Burning CDs, DVDs, etc is the core strength of Roxio, and they continue to do this well. One of my frequent tasks is burning CDs from ISO images. Roxio did this with literally 4 clicks, nice and easy.

The master control panel has been streamlined and it's now easier to get to all of the functions of the package.

Some of the old bloat is gone (the "ringtone maker" is no longer included), although big extraneous components like the PhotoSuite photo editor and audiox mixing tools remain. Those may be useful to the neophyte, but anybody wanting to really tweak their photos is likely to fire up an Adobe product, or something that came with their camera, or with their computer, or some other full featured package. Including such superfluous programs in a Media Creator suite (when they are available from so many other sources) seems excessive, but I guess it lets the publisher lengthen the feature list.

Other major enhancements include support for Blu-Ray, HD DVD, and HD video, though I didn't have the equipment to check out that new functionality.

If you don't need the Vista support, or the enhanced DVD support, there's not a burning reason (pun intended!) to upgrade from Roxio Creator Suite 9 to Roxio Creator Suite 10. But if you're in the market, this is a fine product and does its core media work as advertised.

While I wish it were more streamlined still, the software works well, installs easily, and has become more streamlined than before. Recommended with a 5 star rating.

3 out of 5 stars well......   October 15, 2007

problems installations. Surprised me, really. But I use XP and I see some others has similar problems. I have been making book video trailers and this was recommended to me. It does have a virtual maze of options. Some didn't function for me, and others I am still learning. It's not 1, 2, 3, go...that's for sure. The slide shows with music was nice, but them you can do that on Rockme.com without the headache of learning this program. Not sure the average user will enjoy this program for it's just too much of everything. I will keep giving it a try but so far, thinking I will give Pinnacle a go, too. Heard it does as much, but it's easier to use.

4 out of 5 stars Works Great!   October 15, 2007

This is one of those rare products that does exactly what it promises to do!
I am now able to easily make videos for YouTube and other sharing applications. Roxio is a well known company in this field, and has been for years. I needed something simple to help me make short videos that could be posted and shared. This Media Creator suite does that and much more - I would find it hard to push the boundaries on this software. I think it's also important to mention that you can protect your works also with this software.

I didn't have the install issues that other reviewers noted, running XP SP2.
