5 out of 5 stars A Good First Video Editing Program   June 5, 2008
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

I'd never done any video editing before, so learning this program was a tiny bit tedious. Working with video isn't the same as working with jpegs in Photoshop. Though learning Photoshop was a chore for me too. However, that was years ago and now I'm as comfortable in Photoshop as I am in Word. I am far from there with Video, but I think Ulead is going to help me get there.

I found importing video from my video camera not too difficult, learning to add titles was harder, but I managed. The interface was fairly easy to learn, but as I said, it's going to take me a while before I'm producing Videos I be proud to burn and send to friends and family. Still the program is a lot of fun and I can tell it's a good first step for a girl like me.

3 out of 5 stars Very Good Editor, (but could do more..)   June 4, 2008

I like using VideoStudio. It is easy to learn and has enough features to produce well. However, in my opinion it is lacking in HDV handling, especially output file versatility. If you want to output quality High Definition video for uploading to sites such as vimeo.com, you need another program for the conversion. I use AVS VideoEditor to convert HD mpeg (output from Ulead VS) to other formats such as HD mov, HD mp4, etc.

There also is a problem in using SmartSound. I would like to add music to selected clips, but VS adds it to the entire music track. I haven't figured out how to add to selected clips or adjust it once added and still have the capability of adding different music to the music track along with the first chosen SmartSound track. If I mess around with the music track something causes playback to jump to the end of the production, then I have to undo everything and start over again. VS also needs the ability to add more tracks for music, sound effects, etc.

My other MAJOR complaint is that if you need help from Ulead, you have to PAY for it. There is no support otherwise, even to just ask a question.

Overall, it is a good BASIC video editing solution at a reasonable cost if purchased from a vendor such Amazon.com. You won't get a good deal at the Ulead website.

1 out of 5 stars Beware not to be used with Hi Def Camcorders   May 31, 2008

I bought the Canon Vixia HF100 and shooting exclusively in HD mode. My Computer is a Pentium Core Quad processor with 4 gigs RAM, SATA drive of over 500 gigs, plus an external Firewire drive. I bought this software with high expectations however the following issues are present, even with all the current downloads:

Extreme Choppiness in video editing. After uploading my video files (.m2ts files), I incorporated into the time line and noticed extreme latency making adjustments, rendering and playing back temp editing. This is totally un-useable. I made a number of adjustments including checking that DMA was enabled, Disk Caching was disabled, and increasing swap file size (Bizarre since I am running over 4 gigs of memory), Plus I also enabled the smart proxy service which should assist in making such noticable delays go away. Not so. Nothing worked here. I imagine all the positive reviews were from users not using HD format.

Unless I have some type of fix for this issue, I am forced to find another software replacement. I am looking into Sony Vegas pro 8 as an alternative and will test the trial download.

Stay away from Video Studio 11.5 if you are using a High Def Camcorder.

UPDATE: I've since tried Sony Vegas Pro 8. Absolutely no latency with importing and editing Hi Def files. Sony has it right. It is more expensive, but you get what you pay for, ULEAD has a nice interface, but it can't handle the Higher Def files. This is the selling point. If you sole mission is to put highly compressed video onto the internet, ULEAD may be ok. If you want to do more in-depth editing and work with higher definition files go with Sony Vegas Pro 8 period. Save the hassle

5 out of 5 stars This version works great!   May 30, 2008

I had problems with the previous version of this product, as well as with most other AVCHD capable video editing programs. I got in too early on the development cycle. This version works great. It is more reliable and easier to use than the other editors that I tried. It also has great features that allow a variety of output options.

4 out of 5 stars good for the new movie/video maker   May 30, 2008

As a new user I was afraid to edit and capture video ,and had little hands on experience.I was excited to see that this software offered hope.
This software for one who wants to easily produce professional-High Definition camcorders and create High-Definition HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs as well.
I had found past experience with ulead products, more amateurish, and less satisfying as this superior video/movie program.
I found the graphic face, and organization of the program easy to use without referring to the manual all the time. You can work expediently with convenient template-based Wizards, or or work with manual tools(for the more creatively confident user).
You can easily correct common video problems with one-click corrective filters, generate Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround audio tracks, and add pro-quality titles and transitions. The user can Share movies from ipod to dvd and upload movies them to YouTube with ease. I watch my results on my home theatre/ent. system too. The exciting VideoStudio has useful effective graphic features with ease of use.I was new to this and the wizards guided me through several of the programs options.

I reccommend it as it is a good intro to the video editing experience.
