1 out of 5 stars AVCHD (Blu-ray) Authoring Not   June 12, 2008

I purchased Visual Studio 11.5 Plus to author AVCHD (Blu-ray) disks using standard DVD-burning hardware, but it wouldn't. The problem is that Visual Studio 11.5 Plus does not recognize HD video when it sees it, but wants to re-encode everything. My GO-HD camera generates 1280x720 h.264 video and AAC-LC audio, so you'd think it would be easy to author HD (AVCHD) disks with this product. Unfortunately, the software wants to reencode the video even though it is perfectly good as is (I know this because I can play the video through the PS3 XMB and the PS3 is very picky.) Reencoding HD video takes a lot of horsepower and time. What should have been a 15 minute process was taking 20 hours. The editing features are great, but the product would not deliver on its claim to author HD video to disk. It will allow you to create menus, titles and transitions but all of that is of little value if you can't get the video onto a disk. In fairness, I was able to render a six second clip, burn it as an AVCHD disk and play it on my PS3. The process took about 10 minutes. I next tried a twenty minute clip; after eight hours the rendering completed but the disk failed to burn. I tried again with a 40 minute clip of my son's basketball game, but after 20 hours I aborted the rendering process. I returned the product for a refund. If you have a camera that generates HD video and you want to get it onto a disk, this isn't the solution. I finally figured out how to create AVCHD disks without transcoding the video using readily available freeware. Finally I can easily create and play Blu-ray disks of my home movies on my PS3. (BTW - my system includes a Pentium-D (dual core) processor running at 3.1 GHz, two GB of RAM, Windows XP-Professional x64.)

4 out of 5 stars Fine video program   June 11, 2008

This is a relatively trim video processing program (ie, it runs on my computer which is several years old while a competing studio from Adobe will not run at all.)

VideoStudio Editor: Corel feels the workflow method (following the normal steps to create a movie) are more user-friendly than learning technical editing. I find this to be true: I never learned technical editing of video before and the system led me through it.

Movie Wizard: A quick-and-dirty way to get a slide show with effects chosen by the system. Great for newbies.

DV-to-DVD Wizard: Choose clips directly from digital video, edit and go.

Auto Color and Tone Filters: Fixes low light conditions--a typical problem for amateur video (no light setups)

DVD Authoring: You can add chapters, interactive features to make your own DVD's, including tutorial-style DVDs (teachers may be interested in this feature.)

Special FX and Soundtrack editing. There are the usual pan, fade, effects and sound is full-featured (I like this better than the Adobe offering: The soundtrack portion features:

Audio View: Mix between clip, overlay, narration and music tracks.
Audio Rubber-banding: Adjust sound levels of your video, overlays, narration and background music directly in Audio view.
SmartSound Auto Music Maker: Create unique royalty-free tunes to fit the style and duration of your project.
Audio Filters: Audio Normalization, Remove Noise and others help fix audio problems and enhance the sound.

This is a full-featured package, easy to use and a great piece of software to get the most out of your video clips.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for...   June 11, 2008

I am very happy with this video editor. I've practiced a lot with it and also made a 25 minute video that even impressed my wife and believe me she's never impressed. I find the program very stable and has never crashed so far with Vista. Lots of effects, transitions, and 6 levels of layering. Burning the finished project to a DVD was fast and easy and the program automatically adds a nice opening screen to your video. Adding pictures and music is a snap and varying the audio level is easy. I know there are programs with more features out there but this one does everything I could want. For the price of $60 bucks, its a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars Has all the features I need for non-professional video editing   June 11, 2008

I do most of my video editing on a Mac, with Final Cut Pro (for serious stuff) and iMovie (for home videos to send to the grandparents). Still, I keep my Mac at work and have a PC at home -- I wanted something better than Windows Movie Maker for home use, something that was easy enough for my kids to use, but had the features I expect.

This product fits the bill. It's not as intuitively easy as iMovie, but has features (like layering) that you don't get there, and it is a lot easier to use than Final Cut Pro. It has lots of effects, and you can preview them, if you are into that -- my kids are, but I like to keep my videos simple, with layering and compositing, and standard editing transitions like crossfade or fade in fade out, and color correction, being the only effects I use regularly. I don't have an HD camera so can't vouch for it's ability to work with HD, but it does a fine job working with my DV footage. I still like iMovie better for the simple stuff and I've already overcome many of the learning curves on Final Cut Pro so will likely continue to use that for more complicated video work, but it's nice to have a decent and fairly inexpensive alternative on my home computer, that is simple enough for my kids to use when they want.

5 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations   June 10, 2008

I like this product! I originally purchased version 10 about 18 months ago and used it for a few projects I was working on. I have to say that I'm glad I relented and purchased 11.5 Plus. I had a recent project where I was putting together a mix of stills and video and the stills were not of great quality, however after I burned it to DVD they looked very very good. Actually everyone that was familiar with the stills thought I performed magic on them.

The packaging is a bit misleading tho. I thought I was installing 11.5 Plus but I actually had to go online and download .5 Plus, not a major problem since I suspect I was actually purchasing the license from Amazon.

I like that Corel did not depart from the interface I became accustomed to in version 10. It makes the whole process of moving up a lot easier to just get to work without having to learn a whole new interface.

Anyway, I have a few more projects to do and am sure that they will go off without a hitch. If you need to burn Blu-Ray or AVCHD this is a good product at an affordable price.
