As a drawing program great! Photo editing so so... March 20, 2008 6 out of 13 found this review helpful
I loved the drawing functions within this program and found them somewhat easy to get the hang of -- took a little bit in that they were not as intuitive as I would like however once I figured them out the functionality was good.
On the picture editing side I did not have as much patience. It was not intuitive and I was seldom pleased with the results. If you are looking for an editor for pictures and giving pictures special effects I would by far recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Didn't understand how to use this! March 3, 2008 0 out of 17 found this review helpful
I gave this to my 18yr old Granddaughter. We did not understand how to use this! She is a artist, but this seemed strange to her, something to be used with the computer.
Ready, set, create! February 18, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Back in the mid 90's I went to school to become a graphic designer, and while my career ended up going in a totally different direction, I still find the idea of using a computer to create or enhance artwork and photography quite appealing. I decided to take a chance on Corel's new Painter Essentials 4. I liked the idea of "one stop shopping" for both illustration and photo manipulation software, and my experience with Corel in the past was positive.
I've found Painter Essentials 4 particularly useful in creating freehand illustrations (I'm using the mouse only - no special hardware), coloring scanned line artwork, and editing and enhancing photographs. I love to sketch in pencil and then ink, but am an indifferent colorist at best, so Painter Essentials 4 is a nice tool for adding color to my drawings. The photo enhancing features are great for adding fun special effects to photos, and can be used to restore damaged photographs as well. The software features a wide array of available colors and effects, so the sky is really the limit when it comes to what you want to do with this software.
My only complaint is that the operation of this software is not as intuitive as it could be. I was familiar with the various tools and functions (like riding a bike, it all came back pretty quickly), but someone brand new to this kind of software will need to spend some serious time with the users guide before they can take advantage of this program's various bells and whistles.
Other than that, I'm quite happy with Corel Painter Essentials 4. It's not at the same professional level as Adobe's one-two punch of Illustrator and Photoshop, but for everyday users it's an outstanding graphics product.
Can't get it installed. February 16, 2008 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'd love to tell you what I think of this program, but I can't get it installed. The documentation is good, and it appears to have great features, but I don't know for sure. I'll update this review if I manage to get it to work.
Specialized but good for its purpose February 10, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This product lets you enhance photos you've taken by creating painter-type special effects on the photos. Nothing else. If that's what you want to do, the product is excellent. But don't buy this as an alternative to Photoshop or PhotoImpact, or other picture-editing software. Speaking of which, you can produce many of these same effects if you own Photoshop, but it is much, much, easier with this program. And this is a lot cheaper than the full version of PhotoShop. Installation is easy, the program includes enough tutorials to get you well-started, which is good, as I think those not used to graphics editing programs will need the nudge to get started. It is reasonably easy to use when you get past the initial hump. The program is much easier to use with a graphics pad such as the Wacom tablets than a mouse, and highly recommend getting a tablet if you intend to use this a lot.
