5 out of 5 stars Finally a complete solution easy to use   July 7, 2008

I have used in the past MacAfee and AVG antivirus software, I have always struggled to use them as they have multiple add-ons you have to buy and install depending on what area you want to be safe in (though common sense dictates if I use a computer and buy an anti-virus I expect to be safe everywhere when using my computer)

I had the opportunity to grab a copy of Norton 360 and I am very glad I did. Norton 360 is exactly what an anti-virus software needs to be and offers protection in all areas of your computer. Last year I got a Toshiba Satellite that included Windows Vista (which is a pain already) and a trial version of MacAfee, I never understood how to optimize the use of the MacAfee application, it had too many windows and you had to upgrade different things at different times, I was relieved when the trial expired and I got to install a free application called AVG. AVG was good enough for what I needed but suffered from the same thing, 'if you want anti-spy ware you have to download and install this', 'if you want security using the internet install this other thing'...

I uninstalled AVG and installed Norton 360, first of all the installation was quick, it ran for over an hour (as I decided to have it scan my laptop while installing, if you decide not to it may take less time) Once I completed the setup and the application opened I went through the menus in one single screen which is great! The four areas in which the application is divided are in a single screen with submenus when you click over any of them, from this main menu you can scan, setup and even defragment your hard drive (the PC Tune-up feature helps optimize computer performance). The time it has been installed in my laptop I have not noticed any slowness in performance and it has worked smoothly in the background while I surf the web or work in it.

One feature I liked is the 'Identity protection', in which you setup a profile with your personal info (including credit card number) and it will keep you safe when doing transactions online, you setup a password that Norton360 will require when doing transactions regardless of any security measures the web pages you use have. In my case I access my bank online to do transactions all the time and purchase from web sites, this feature serves as an additional security option. Norton360 also allows me to monitor my network and it even has functionalities that the software that came with my wireless router doesn't have!

Forget about buying antivirus software which makes you buy add-ons to feel safe, Norton360 has everything you need in one box.

1 out of 5 stars should never have upgraded   July 3, 2008

from Norton Works 2003. This version sounded like a dream come true, from fixing and cleaning PC issues up to anti-virus protection and firewall. Well, things seemed great until I turned the computer off--and it didn't go off, which I didn't discover until the next day. seems one CCsvchst.exe file couldn't shut down properly so the computer didn't shut down at all. Turns out everyone is having this problem (it's all over the norton message boards) and the norton people are working on a fix, but in the meantime, people who try to uninstall the program are discovering that this is corrupting or completely wiping out their files on their computers. So now I'm terrified to uninstall the program and simply have to make sure I manually shut down the .exe file every time I try to turn off my computer.

Does Norton not TEST their own programs on everyday user computers before they release them to the public? This problem begins from moment one of installation, so I don't know how they didn't realize this problem existed.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING DO NOT PURCHASE   July 1, 2008

WARNING:
Norton 360 2.0 is an awful product. I have a brand new hp pavilion dv6000 notebook with a windows vista OS. I had heard some good and bad things about 360 but decided sine it stated vista compatible and I met the min requirements it would be fine. BE WARNED AND HEED THIS ADVICE:
I purchased the 360 from Amazon. It arrived fully packaged and sealed and once I installed it my entire system was seized. Norton 360 was so bad it disabled my internet connection and didn't allow me to access any programs. When I attempted to uninstall it it froze, furthermore it would not even allow me to go into my control panel. When I went to my computer settings everything was blank. After much ado my husband and I were able to acess the windows recovery system (during startup F11). We backed up to a previous date (Pre installation) and alas the Norton 360 was removed. However, it did not end there. My wireless internet connection now ceased to exist. However it was showing that all of the connections were fine. After an hour phone call to HP the technician finally disclosed that sometimes Norton elements remain on the system. Hidden from the naked eye. He informed me eventhough we did a microsoft system restore as well as a recovery the trace could still be there. He advised to go onto the Norton website and download the "Norton Removal Tool".
Once I sucessfully downloaded the tool and transfered it to my notebook, my system began working again. Alilejua my internet is back up and all traces of Norton have ceased to exist.
So be warned Norton 360 may takeover your system like it's a virus itself.

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good   July 1, 2008

Let me preface this review by noting that I'm running Windows XP, so results with Vista may differ.

Norton 360 seems, in general, to get mediocre reviews in the press as well as from a major consumer publication that I read routinely. As a consumer, I don't have access to--for instance--the kind of virus-catching software that professionals use to test the effectiveness of anti-virus packages. As a result, my review can only really address general performance, the user interface, and convenience.

General Performance. Norton 360 seems fine. It doesn't noticeably slow down my system. I haven't gotten any virus warnings, or in fact ANY kind of warnings. So I can only conclude that the software is either seamlessly protecting me, that no threats are being encountered, or that I'm being infected with all kinds of viruses and other on-line threats. Given the lack of symptoms of any problems and my history of good experiences with Symantec products, I assume all is well.

User Interface. The UI is simple and intuitive, perfect for people (like me) who just want peace of mind without a lot of fiddling. There's an icon in the system tray with a green check, which tells me that all is well. When it changes to a red exclamation point, I know I have to do something, and the interface for correcting the problems is simple. There are four areas of protection: PC Security, Identity Protection, Backup, and PC Tuneup. Each area has a simple and intuitive menu that appears when you hover the mouse pointer over the corresponding icon.

Convenience. For me, it's perfect. Virtually all functions are scheduled and/or occur automatically. Unlike a Trend Micro product I used before, the system doesn't constantly present me with issues and ask me what I want to do about them.

After over a month, I've had no problems. However, given what I've read about Norton 360's performance on catching viruses (on a consumer web-site I trust), I can't in good conscience give this product five stars.

1 out of 5 stars Critical Features Removed... NO DISCLOSURE   June 27, 2008

Ive used symantec products for over 10yrs. Norton Systemworks was an awful resource hog yet I stuck with Symantec/Norton products into the 360 line because I grew so fond of their excellent Ad blocking software.

With Norton 360 2.0, that feature was discontinued. No (adequate) disclosure was given by Symantec that upgrading to 2.0 would uninstall my previous add-on pack and that the Ad Blocking would not be supported in the new 2.0 version. After downloading t\he original add-on pack it failed to install w/ 2.o. In fine print on a tech support forum on the symantec site, I learned that ad-blocking would no longer be offered or supported by symantec.

Im not much of a techie, other reviewers here are making valid points. From a practical standpoint, removal of this feature is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. No one from India even responded to my email to Symantec lamenting about the removal of this feature. This company has seriously lost focus on it's customers.
