Typical Microsoft March 26, 2008 Typical Microsoft program, slow to open, needed updates immediately, occasional computer freeze but widely accepted software and nice features over Office 2004 for Mac. Really do like Entourage.
Just say "NO" March 25, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
MS Office 2008 is pure evil. Filled with quirks, problems and bugs, it is not a good replacement for any previous version of Office for the Mac. Just say "NO!". How this bug-filled abomination was ever released is a mystery.
Eventually, Microsoft will get this right, but it's going to take a major update. If I could easily do so, I would revert to Office v.X which ran beautifully and never gave me an issue.
One step forward, three steps back March 25, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Just took delivery of a new 8-core Mac Pro with 10GB of memory. Thought it was time to try out the "new" Office 2008 for Mac with the new machine. I primarily use Word and Excel to create and edit documents and spreadsheets throughout the day. Well, both applications "look prettier", once they finally load. But using them is SLOOOW and painful. Just switching between Word and Excel requires a coffee break, and these are running on what amounts to be a supercomputer! I stuck with 2008 for one day, but quickly realized that it was taking me 2-3 times as long to do anything as it would in 2004.
I've removed Office 2008 from my Mac Pro and re-installed Office 2004. 2004 is blindingly fast on the Mac Pro.
Only Microsoft could pull off releasing a "new" version of an application that is 2-4x as slow as it's predecessor. Keep up the good work, Microsoft!
microsoft excel for mac March 24, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home & Student Edition I did not find this easy to use although I had much experience with Excel for Windows. What was most specifically annoying is that earlier files in Excel for Windows that included dates did not translate correctly when downloaded in Mac Excel. The dates can be converted by adding a constant that varies sightly for different dates. That the conversion cannot easily be made for all dates reflects sloppiness on the part of Microsoft and one can do nearly equally will with NeoOffice, which is free.

Necessary for every college student, but it take some time to get used to the new menus and options and lag is unavoidable.
