4 out of 5 stars Give it a break   February 28, 2008

I am a 100% Windows to Mac convert having gotten rid of all of my Windows machines and purchased three Macs, so it may seem odd that I am about to defend a Microsoft product. Yes this release has some bugs, what new version doesn't? Yes, some functionality changed, but it will get better with time. What you should NOT overlook is that this version works seamlessly with Windows versions, it is very performant now that it is a Universal binary and MOST OF ALL...you can now buy it for home use at a reasonable price AND install it on three machines for that price. It is not a perfect release but this will put my iWork 08 back on the shelf. It's price performance is just far superior.

I never thought I would rate a Microsoft product five stars, but...

Given the Google Juggernaut, which, in my opinion, will be the next software monopoly, I have sympathies for Microsoft (believe it or not). That being said, this is the first time in my 54+ years that I have purchased a Microsoft product.

This product is as advertised; it allows me to open Office files from others; the price is right!

I couldn't wait for the product to be delivered. When I got it, I was very pleased!

2 out of 5 stars Unstable   February 27, 2008

I bought a new Mac with Leopard and Office 2008 because I dislike Vista. I expected greater stability and reliability than I had with Windows. On the third day of my using Word, it crashed and completely vaporized my document and did not provide autorecover. I have used Word for many years and never had anything remotely like this happen, even when there was a power failure at my house.

If the data is not secure, it's hard to be interested in anything else the software suite does.

4 out of 5 stars Bread and butter software for me   February 26, 2008

I use Word/PowerPoint/Excel regularly and have been doing so for a very long time. For the last 8 years, I have used Office 2000/2003 Standard on the PC platform. I bought Office 2008 for Mac to use on my new Mac. The look and feel is somewhat different from Office 2003 but closer to Office 2007 on the PC. All my negatives have to do with UI changes, so they are minor irritants.

I like the new PowerPoint templates, plus the PDF saver is very nice - although it is annoying that the PDF file gets split into multiple files if there is a change in page setup (i.e. one of the pages is oriented in landscape instead of portrait!) So I end up having to remerge PDF. Fortunately Apple has a nice little utility called automator that does the job.

I got Excel to run out of memory while moving some data around the spread sheet. But apparently that is a known problem: unknown if it is a Mac specific issue or a general MS Office problem! Use cut and paste instead of drag to work around.

I tried Entourage but prefer vanilla Mail/iCal on the Mac. On the PC, I had switched from MS Outlook to Thunderbird/Lightning because it was more reliable, provided better functionality and did not create legacy database problems that Outlook has. I really dislike the fact that Microsoft mail programs are not cross-compatible, reading old mail is a real pain.

I absolutely love the 2008 version of Microsoft Office for Mac Home & Student version. Downloading was fast and simple. Improvements are significant both in operation and appearance. I have had no problems with any of the modules.
