3 out of 5 stars Simple to use.   August 24, 2008
I bought this since it would be the 1st year I did taxes after having a child and wanted to make sure I did it correctly. It is very simple and easy to follow. My complaint is that it does not give examples (like the more expensive version) of charity deductions. Which I was hoping for so I could do a mock run and see if I donated some items I have if it would make a difference or not. Next year I will get the other version. All in all though simple.

5 out of 5 stars Turbotax: more like Turbo Super Awesome!   July 31, 2008
This game is awesome. It's like I'm actually doing my taxes. It's very realistic, if you screw up then you get audited, and you also get tax refunds sometimes. Protip: register as a dependent for your first couple of playthroughs until you figure out the game mechanics. 5/5 butt apples!

1 out of 5 stars Bad deal   April 19, 2008
I thought I could save money using this cheaper version of turbotax. I was unable to transfer information from last year's turbotax which was done online. I had to start all over, paying the online price, and returned this bit of useless programming to turbotax.

1 out of 5 stars too basic to be of use   March 31, 2008
To those complaining of incorrect treatment of income or expenses, for years this has been the case with TurboTax.

I've always used TurboTax and I can't remember a single return that was correct without substantial editing. Anytime you get off the beaten track (partnerships, trusts, Katrina damage, etc) its a deficient app. You must check your returns and insure the manner in which deductions are being handled makes sense.

You also have to check what's printed on the forms. Last year I got a letter from the IRS about forms not substantiating the deductions taken on the 1040. Crazy, but what I was seeing on the screen was not what was being printed out on the returns. Not a financial issue but another waste of time, and exposure to an audit, courtesy of Intuit.

With the Basic version now stripped of much of its functionality, I guess Intuit expects us to fork over twice the price for the same, poor, level of functionality that used to be in Basic.

Overpriced products that don't work correctly are not a winning combination. At some point the users will have the last laugh.

1 out of 5 stars price going up, feature going down   March 30, 2008
I started using Turbotax almost ten years ago, and as Taxcut quality improved and TurboTax kept raising prices, I switched to Taxcut three years ago. This year, after a friend's recommendation, I tried to use Turbotax again, what a piece of junk. TaxCut imports pretty much all the information from TurboTax files, but TurboTax DOES NOT. All TurboTax users should switch to TaxCut, TaxCut is easier to use, covers all the issues, and cheaper. TurboTax has nothing to compete with other than a longer time brand name.
