Well hey....It's cheaper than Windows. April 16, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm giving this 4 stars for a couple of reasons.
1. It's not Windows ,and I have had it for a while, and have not contracted any viruses.
2. It's a lot cheaper than any Windows OS's out there.
I have found Xandros OS to be very reliable, although, it does crash some programs. The instant messenger that comes with it sucks and trying to install a game with Crossover takes a mastermind. Despite my complaints, Xandros Desktop OS 3.0 is well worth the money.
Impossible to work with and no support. March 30, 2006 6 out of 21 found this review helpful
First off, this is NOT Windows, you cannot click on certain websites and use them. Since it does not use IE, or anything that is commonly used in the mainstream.
This offers no functionality other than some backwoods programs which crash the majority of the time.
Just buy Windows XP Pro, save yourself the money, trouble and time!
Excellent Windows to Linux Migration Distro but ... November 17, 2005 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I concur with the reviewers who have found Xandros an easy and robust Linux distro, particularly, if you are coming from the Windows environment and don't want to spend too much time getting to know Linux in all its gory details.
I only have a couple of gripes.
First, the gcc environment is not fully supported. You don't get gcj or Fortran as part of the 'out-of-the-box' installation. You also don't get KDevelop, which is something that you really need if you want to do any kind of programming.
Second, the current versions (Delux and Business) do not support Oracle installations. If you want to test your application in a Linux environment using Oracle as the background db, with Xandros you'll be out of luck.
Third, if you decide to change or update what you get in the installation package, e.g., MySQL, you'll likely end up messing up the baseline configuration.
Bottom line, a great distro but only if your requirements match exactly what Xandros supports. Any deviations and you'll be likely reinstalling the whole thing.
Driving to a Friendlier Linux August 23, 2005 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Linux has been portrayed as a "nerd's only" Operating System. Xandros Linux has proven wrong that assumption. From the moment you put the CD-ROM on the drive, there are few and simple instructions to follow. The process is very user friendly. Once installed there is little grief for the programs used regularly on Windows, since Cross Over Office runs the most popular programs. Besides the novelty of loading a new OS, I get the tranquility of a virus free, spy ware free, environment and a safe heaven for my data.
Cheap version of a Mac Computer July 30, 2005 6 out of 35 found this review helpful
A linux that tries to look like Windows, save your money and buy a real MAC.
