Not as impressive as I had hoped... February 26, 2007 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
Not very colorful as compared to Vista and is EXTREMELY limited in what you can do with it. Recovery of corrupted files is very difficult, if not impossible and the time machine featue of Leopard is pretty much a joke since this is something that could be done in windows (if you know what you are doing). The protection against viruses is good (but this has more to do with the fact that programmers don't make viruses for computers that have under 5% market share than it does the software [even with a unix base]). Overall, not bad software for Apple, very easy to use, but if you are used to customizing every inch of your PC, you will just want to stick with windows. Here is my take on which OS is right for you:
Windows: * Business (Outlook Express is a must in business and Mac Mail, well, sucks in comparison, it is really really really bad, and it connects horribly using IMAP) * Taxes * Programmers * Gamers * Writers (Mac runs Office, but it really isn't as good as on PC and only comes with 5 programs) * Web Designers * Banking * Education (apple has gotten better at this recently, but most schools still run PC.)
Mac: * Graphic Designers * Video Editors * Musicians (Speakers on mac are "blah" at best, so it is a good idea to get some speakers with your Mac) * Online Chatting (iChat is AMAZING, the video conferencing is awful, but the chat software in ilife is great overall)
Overall, the software was impressive, but as a programmer and web developer, I will stick with running my PC for important stuff and switch over to mac whenever I need to do design work.
It doesnt install!!! January 27, 2007 6 out of 40 found this review helpful
This is an example of a large company pertpetrating fraud on the people who buy its products. I bought my son an iPod for Christmas. Unfortunately he could not use it to download from itunes on his 4 yr old Mac Powerbook computer. He needed to buy the newer (tiger) operating system. So another [...] to buy this operating system. He has been unable to install it on his Powerbook. Both of us have spent over 4 hours on the phone with Mac tech support(hah!) and have found no solution. Finally they told us to bring it in to an Applestore (three hour drive away) which we did, only to be told that it would cost [...] for them to even look at it. I hope no one else has to suffer like we have just because you bought an iPod.
Upgrade from Mac OS X 10.3.9 January 25, 2007 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
The upgrade went smoothly and Tiger 10.4.6 appears to be as stable as 10.3.9
Not all it is hyped up to be (well the small hype it has) January 24, 2007 10 out of 56 found this review helpful
I work with both Windows XP Professional and Mac OS X TIger My system setups are below:
PC: Windows XP Professional 2.00 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GB RAM @ 560 Mhz 70 GB HD 256 MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Video Card
My Mac that unfortunately cost almost as much as the PC: Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.8 1.33 Ghz G4 PowerPC 1 GB RAM @ I don't know it's speed. 40 GB HD 128 MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9550
So as you can see, my systems are capable of running at their full capability. When I run Mac, it lacks the things I require to use it. Like for example, I don't like going to the Applications folder to open my Apps when in Windows its all conveniently located in the start menu. Stability is another issue. My Mac locks up frequently (and yes I perform routine checks on it) however my PC runs seamlessly. Programming is difficult and worthless because of the lack of users for Mac. I have constructed many Apps on MS Visual Studio however when I try programming on the Mac it just frustrates me. Another problem is the lack of software for Mac. If your a gamer or just like using a variety of programs, STAY AWAY FROM MAC OS X!!! Trust me it is not worth it. And it is just not technical enough for all those geeks out there. Sure if your someone who wants simplicity, go ahead, because that is exactly what you will get. The good parts of Mac arent worthy of what Mac really is. The only reason there are no viruses on the Mac is because nobody cares about it. Personally if I was making a virus, I would write it for PC since I would miss my PC much more than the Mac. This is not biased because I have been using both Windows and Mac for over 10 years.
Mac OS X 10.4.6 upgrade January 11, 2007 Very easy to install. Watch for print drivers that will need updating. So far system has been running fine.
