5 out of 5 stars A Blessing for the Disabled   April 26, 2008

Back in 1977 an IBM repairman came to my office to fix one of our Selectrics. During a break I told this gentleman the kind of typewriter I wanted was one I could sit in my easy chair and dictate and it would type. He said, we are working on it now but accents are giving us a problem. Science fiction has become reality.

I put off buying this because most of whom I knew said it didn't work. Conditions became such that I had to take a chance on it. All I can say is it must be very much improved from earlier programs. It takes work at the beginning to train the program to your voice, diction, and spelling. For the first five times the program insisted on spelling my name Barry instead of Barrie, but it has learned now and never makes that mistake.

If you have conditions that make typing troublesome and typing is important to you, this program is well worth the price. The rebate is only applicable if you are upgrading an earlier or standard edition. If your head is overfull of knowledge and therefore large in girth, I recommend you change the headset. The one furnished is too small for me. I recommend this program if you have a need for something like this.

1 out of 5 stars Useless for browsing the internet   April 22, 2008

I bought Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 Preferred because I do a lot of internet research. I was hoping to relieve arm and finger fatigue after hours of clicking and scrolling. I believed the manufacturer's claims that it works for browser commands. But it has a low accuracy rate. If I want to scroll down 5 spaces, I say, "go down five". I usually have to repeat the command as many as 7 times before it actually scrolls. In Microsoft Word, it prints out the words perfectly, so it's not a problem with the recognition. But in Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.0.0.12 (current version), it is quite sluggish. To click on a link, one must say, "link" and the links on the screen become highlighted with a number. But I have to say, "link (pause) ... link (pause) ... link (pause).. link" and finally the links become highlighted. If I want to go to a page that has link 4, I say, "four (pause) ... four (pause) ... four" and it finally opens that page. Also, the link numbers only appear at the top of the page. If you scroll down, and say "link", it won't show the links no matter how many times you say it. In Microsoft Word, all these words work fine. The product is useless for my needs. - disappointed in San Diego.

I have used Dragon Naturally Speaking for several years and Version 9 is the best yet.

4 out of 5 stars Happy first-time user   April 18, 2008
First, here is my hardware setup:

Computer: Dell Latitude D610
CPU: 2.13 GHz Intel Pentium M Processor
RAM: 1 GB
Sound Card: Default integrated card
Headset: Plantronics DSP 400

This is my first day using the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred with Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Word. The software isn't perfect, but it performs really well.

If you choose to do the training as well as let NaturallySpeaking analyze your writing style from your e-mails and from your documents, it will do a fairly good job of recognizing your words and your writing style.

I have tendinitis in both wrists. Even though I have to do minor corrections every now and then, I am doing a lot less typing than I would normally do without this product.

This review was typed entirely using NaturallySpeaking with minimal editing on the keyboard. If you have wrist pain or finger pain and you're looking for an alternative to an expensive specialty keyboard, I would recommend that you try NaturallySpeaking.

I will be purchasing a Mac soon, and I hope that the software performs the same way in Parallels or VMware Fusion.

3 out of 5 stars Be Careful Regarding Rebate Offer!!   April 14, 2008

If you are like me and do not always read the fine print, be aware of the sneaky rebate offer!! It only applies to people who ALREADY OWN A PREVIOUS VERSION of this software, and who can prove it on top. Otherwise, there will be zero rebate! This bothered me about the company (Nuance).. you really need to dig around to find this little piece of information.
