Will never buy another Symantic product again September 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Norton Internet Security slowed my computer to a crawl and eventually allowed through viruses that completely seized up my computer. As this was happening, I tried repeatedly to email and call Symantec technical support without any response whatsoever. Symantec is also terrible about continuing to charge your credit card (if you renew online) after your subscription runs out even if you do not re-subscribe to their software. One very disappointed customer.
Went fine for our three PCs September 11, 2008 I bought this recently and installed it on a new Toshiba laptop and on two Dell desktops that were running previous versions (2006 and 2007) of NIS. All went fine. There was a message at one point that there was an installation error on one of the Dells, but the installation software somehow resolved the issue itself. That certainly never happened before. One Dell has just 512M of RAM, one 1G and the Toshiba 3G.
But I don't doubt the horror stories in the other reviews. Installing software is still something of a crap shoot on a Windows PC.
Worst oftware in the market September 9, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I don't usually write reviews on Amazon.com, but today i felt that I need to share my bad experience with this product with you guys. This software:
1. Makes your computer slow 2. Doesn't get along with Windows Vista 3. Not easy to use 4. Confuses Internet Explorer and Firefox
And more
Why Pay Money for Anti-Virus Software? September 9, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Look, you can download any number of free antivirus programs online. Take AVG Free, used by 70 million people and 5 stars from Cnet. Nice and quick. Throw on Zone Alarm for your firewall and you have inconspicious programs that don't take over your computer the way norton does.
It took me 45 minutes to unintall this very program and I have a fast computer. Don't throw your money away on inferior software just because they have a picture of a smiling middle-aged woman on their cover. Legally download something for free and go buy a nice bottle of wine instead.
Not much to complain about September 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this after reading a number of good reviews in computer magazines, although the negative reviews on Amazon made me a little nervous. It's been over a month now, and I really can't complain about the program. It does everything it was advertised to do, including antivirus, software firewall, and spyware blocker, and it does so relatively unobtrusively. There hasn't been a noticeable hit on resources, although startup is a little slower as the program checks for updates on the internet.
My old firewall - Zonealarm Pro - worked well, but it was very annoying with the constant popups asking about permissions for specific programs. Norton NIS did that in the beginning also, but it went away once I made a change in the preferences to not show these messages.
Overall, you could probably get by with a collection of free programs to do the same thing that Norton NIS does (e.g. AVG antivirus, Zonealarm basic, Spybot), but the convenience of having a single program makes up for the cost.
