install bugs October 3, 2008 Great product, does what it is supposed to do, once it is installed, but the installation!!! Once I found the link that allowed their tech to figure out what was wrong, and that took me some doing, after I had tried to install it a couple of times, including using the Norton Utility that is supposed to clean out old Norton installations, it took the tech about an hour to figure out what the problems were and fix them.
He was excellent, superb, obvioiusly in South Asia, and you have to be willing to allow them to take over your computer, but why was it so difficult (I run Windows XP on AMD Athlon) to install, and so hard to find the on line tech support link?
Does not work as boot disc September 26, 2008 I use Norton Ghost 11 to backup/restore XP partitions, it's fast and works great.
Boot from CD, choose partition to backup/restore, choose destination partition/file, and you are done. It even compresses the data when doing backup to image file.
I tried to boot from the Norton Ghost 14 CD and it gave an I/O error and stopped.
I'm going back to v11, I've never had any problems with it.
Norton Ghost 14... downhill battle September 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had previously used Norton Ghost product in older versions (around Ghost 5 or so). Recently my parent's computer had a hard drive crash. After successfully diagnosing the problem and correcting it, I decided not to trust it in the future... and that I would ghost the old drive to a new, larger drive.
I had a limited amount of time, and wanted to get the now running PC returned, so I went over to the Norton site and paid full price for a download version of the software.
Ghost 14 is very different than the older versions. First, it installs several services on your system. Second it comes with an iso image for a "recovery cd." The "recovery cd" has no ability to copy a drive. The only way to do it is through the windows drive copy function. Well, I tried this several times and the imaged drive would not boot into windows, and it froze before reaching the welcome screen. After several attempts at re-imaging I gave up and made a few phone calls. One of my friends came over with a CD boot disc made from Acronis which worked flawlessly on the first try.
It seems I've wasted $80 on some useless software. This might be okay if you are looking for a program to automatically backup files to a second or external drive... but there's freeware programs that do that just fine without the need for all the services. PASS on Ghost 14.
Norton Ghost August 28, 2008 This product is not for the novice. The start-up book that accompanies the CD does not provide sufficient instructions to the novice. I had to have a friend help with the gosting of my small hard drive to my large hard drive. He used a five year old copy of Ghost to accomplish this effort.
Norton, The Ghost with the most! August 27, 2008 Once I got used to the new interface, the product did exactly what I needed. It even restores domain settings at work correctly so I don't have to go to IT every time I restore a setup on my system and have them reestblish my company network credentials.
