4 out of 5 stars BitDefender Antivirus 2008   July 29, 2008
Signed on to this antivirus software for the 30 day free trial.

Bought this before the 30 day trial was up. when I recieved the software from Amazon all I had to do was enter the key from the CD sleeve and the software kept working. No mus No fuss. I am using it on 3 computers. A Dell Laptop with Home XP, a Dell Desktop with Home XP and and old Mutt (many different parts from old computers) with Windows 2000 and I have had NO problems so I cannot comment on thier customer service.

$30.00 for 2 years for 3 computers and No problems for approx 2 months. No Brainer.

4 out of 5 stars The best antivirus solution...   July 28, 2008
For the vast majority of computer users, anti-virus programs are a necessary evil. So if you need one, why not go with the best? What I like about Bitdefender is that they consistently rate in the top two as far as effectiveness at catching known and unknown threats (Norton and McAfee generally rate between #5-8). And to top it off, their software is very easy on system resources. If you are running Norton or McAfee and you switch to Bitdefender, you will notice a nice speed increase. I also want to run an anti-virus program that basically never needs my attention or pops anything up (unless I'm getting/running a virus) and once properly configured, Bitdefender does that. The configuration options are many, and may confuse novice users, so read the electronic documentation. Best of all, the price is very reasonable.

On the other hand, Bitdefender's support structure is bad. If you'll need to contact a human for support, then look elsewhere. They are based out of Eastern Europe (Romania). When the company I work for was looking for enterprise anti-virus solutions, we contacted them in every way possible for some information, and never heard back. Fortunately I've never NEEDED to contact them myself. There are other support options available like a message board at their website (all volunteer) and Google.

So it's really a tradeoff of sorts - you get the best (and frankly, the most inexpensive) anti-virus solution out there, but the worst human-to-human support. I strongly suggest you run the free 30-day trial of this program on your computer before deciding to buy. The trial is fully functional and available for download from the Bitdefender website.

5 out of 5 stars The best antivirus software I've owned   July 27, 2008
This is the best antivirus software I've owned. I was suspicious that there was something malicious on my computer, but neither Trend Micro Antivirus nor Webroot Spy Sweeper could find anything. When I installed Bitdefender, it immediately detected and removed a Trojan. The software has not slowed down my computer one bit and has continued to remove bad stuff from my computer. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Bitdefender verses Norton   July 26, 2008

I am very pleased with the BitDefender antivirus, antispyware software purchased from Amazon. It installed flawlessly on my multiple computers, having multiple operating systems. BitDefender perfoms a full scan nightly, and frequently leaves me with a morning message listing trojans and spyware which evaded Yahoo's defenses and were found and removed by Bitdefender. I feel that the small added price to upgrade to 3 computers was a real bargin.
When my Norton antivirus software was due to renew, Symantec charged my credit card with a renewal fee, which they did credit back to me following a phone call after I sent the following message.
"Symantec's advertisements state their products were ok to install on 3 pcs, so I allowed the automatic reinstatement to be charged to my credit card. My first attempt to install Norton 360 on a 2nd computer failed and at 10 AM, I contacted your customer service. Your first associate knowing that my os were both MS XP and MS 2000, informed me that Norton 360 was incompatible with MS 2000, and said I could downgrade to IS 2006/2008 which would work on both of my pcs. This first associated took my credit card info and did a credit/debit to effect the transaction. The 2008 installed ok on the XP pc, the 2006 did not on the MS 2000 pc.

Over the next 10 hours I called back many times and got a different cs person each time. I discussed the problem with each of them, set up a link so they could troubleshoot, and each of your people assured me that the issue was resolved. Each of your associates uninstalled and reinstalled Norton software and thought the issue was resolved, but none except the last stayed connected long enough to know that activation was not possible. Your last associate, a super -troubleshooting tech, after 2 hours trying, finally called me and told me that my product code would not work for both versions of my OS software. Why didn't all your cs associates know this? Lack of expertise at Symatec wasted many hours of your time and mine. The only solution offered at the end of the day, 8 PM, was offered by Semantec was purchasing a separate copy of IS 2006 at additional cost. For the inconvience caused, I feel it should have been free. In the course of all this, of course, my existing anti virus and anti spyware programs were removed, so I am left unprotected. Alternately, perhaps I could upgrade the 2nd pc to xp, but this is a lot of work."

4 out of 5 stars Computer boots faster   July 8, 2008
My 2008 Norton A/V intolerably slowed down booting both a desktop and a laptop, and occasionally caused them to run slowly. The virus scans were also time consuming.

So, based on user reviews, I decided to try the bitdefender. While I don't know how it compares to the Norton in ferreting out problems, it sure speeded up the computers, and does a full scan in about half the time. It alerted me to an attempted update of a Norton A/V module, which stubbornly remained after the rest of the Norton had been uninstalled.

The installation was a bit confusing, after installing the program, it seemed to want to start all over again. It turns out that was one of the last steps. I called customer service, they were very responsive.
