I have been using ACT! for over 14 years and have found it a reliable and great contact database. HOWEVER, here comes Sage to buy this great product and they have managed to turn a great product in to a DOG! It is extremely slow and the implementation of SQL server at the database server is terrible. I could go on and on. Lost 2 full days of productivity trying to make this thing work. Thank God I kept my Act! 6 database. I really feel like sueing a company for messing up a product so badly.

An Act! user and advocate since the first version, I have consistently recommended it, even demanded it. A veteran of many Act! upgrades, I installed this one and enthusiastically proceeded, only to find it unusable.

Opening a database is a trial-and-error procedure, with incessant and varied "network error" messages, even though I am not on any kind of network! When I do get it to run, it is incredibly slow on a new 3.2 GHz PC with 2 GB of RAM. Crashes, ill-behaved screen updates, black-on-black menus, blank windows, and "ghosts" of closed dialog windows abound. (The other reviews are dead-on.) It has decided that my name is and always shall be "Chris Huffman" (the demo database username) and keeps trying to open the demo database, regardless of which database file I click on. Even deleting all files associated with demo database does not help!

I started documenting the problems hoping to call tech support and get some resolution, as I've gone past the 60-day trial and am (technically) stuck with it, but it's too much to document.

The coup de grace came when I decided to extract my data from the main database file and make an emergency move to Excel, a not-too-difficult thing to do with previous versions, only to find that the records are stored in a non-ASCII file structure and so they are quite useless. (Previous versions used a dBASE-like file format.)

I am abandoning Act! forever and moving to an alternative. A class-action suite is called for here. This product does not come close to being functional, much less meeting advertised claims.

I just spent over an hour on the phone with Sage Software, getting shuffled around to six different people, none of whom helped. I've used Act for many years, but the 2006 version sucks. It takes 25 seconds to launch, even on a fast computer with tons of RAM. Twice, I contacted their tech support, which was overseas (another thing that ticks me off), and they were completely unhelpful.
Next, I get a notice to upgrade to 2007. I just "upgraded" 2 months ago! So my call to Sage today was to see about getting a refund for 2006 and getting 2007 instead. After this whole crummy experience, they've told me I have to talk to someone else. Forget it. They've lost a customer. I wish I'd looked at these reviews sooner.

What happened to Act 2006. Why upgrade ? It takes way too long for back ups, and the extra are not that great. I was glad that the pocket PC sync seems to work both ways, but it still is not worth it.

We upgraded from a much older version of ACT! (which was fairly good). The 2006 version really stinks to high heaven. It's so incredibly slow that we are exploring other software...it's been almost unusable. Don't waste your money.
