1 out of 5 stars Wow, you people feel my pain!!!   July 6, 2006

Everybody that is saying something negative is so dead on. It's like all of you read my mind. I can not stress the following statement enough... PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW! PAINFULLY SLOW!

I bought my computer specifically to handle major drains like ACT, and even to be fast with ACT, but it made no difference. ACT is a joke... After paying [...] to call customer support, they tell you that it's your computer. That's funny. I would like to hear them tell us about this magical computer that can process ACT at just tolerable speeds. Maybe at NASA.

The whole reason behind ACT! is to increase our efficiency, and it does the complete opposite!?!?!?!?! I just read a promo they sent me about Version 9 and nothing in there about speeding things up. I'm done with ACT. I think their whole deal is to give people terrible equipment and then make their real money by charging [...] for the customer support that ACT knows you will need for their already broken product!!!

1 out of 5 stars Act 2006 is a real disappointment   July 6, 2006

If there was a way to migrate back to Act 6 I would do it in a minute. ACT 2006 is very slow. I have had to spend about 7 hours with their tech support group just to get to where the registration information would not corrupt, keeping me out of my own files at critical times. I have used ACT for more than 10 years and 2006 is a big step backwards

1 out of 5 stars a total waste of time   June 26, 2006

Our office bought ACT! 2006 and has had one problem after another with this tool. It does not integrate well with Outlook to begin. We tried to use ACT email, and found it to be unreliable and quirky to use (you'd think they'd have someone teach them the ABCs of user-friendliness and basic features).

ACT! 2006 is a resource hog on your computer. We only have 5 users trying to share a database of ~2000 users and have found it to be a sluggish nightmare. Most of us have decent PCs, but none of are pleased with ACT! 2006's performance.

ACT! 2006 calender is also ineffective. It doesn't interface well with PDAs (the greater insult here is that you have to buy 3rd party tools to even make it *work*, if you call that working).

ACT's support team is worthy of Dilbert-sytle cartooning and shows how out-sourcing, a normally effective support concept, can be done incorrectly. First, one must spend a long time on hold listening to elevator music. Then, a totally clueless first-line "engineer" must be confused enough to get a higher-support engineer that must be re-explained your problem. Eventually someone uses remote access to clean-up their mess. Amazing to think that they have the nerve to charge fulltime users for this. It must be a real money maker for someone....

In conclusion: avoid this tool. I think in the time to get this tool running (and crashed and resupported) you can build your own effective spread sheet or *gasp* MS Access database.

1 out of 5 stars Designed for mid-sized businesses not inviduals   June 16, 2006

I have worked as an IT professional with application software for over 20 years and several other CRM packages and ACT! is clearly in a league of their own. It is the most poorly architected application I have ever encountered, and clearly their is no effort made to test the functions of the application before it ships.

The application is cobbled together from MS SQL and Microsoft .NET and when there is a problem with the database there is no way to recover by using the ACT! application. When there is a edit check that prevents a database setup from occurring it leaves vestiges behind that prevent creating a new database or accessing the old. And there is a limit on the number of databases a user license can access so all these phantom databases end up disabling the program.

Uninstalling takes hours and so many pieces are left behind on the computer, with special services, the registry and the .NET framework, that a clean reinstall is not possible. If you have a hard drive crash and need to restore the application code to a computer and restore the database it can take days and even then your chance for success is almost zero.

[...]

Unless you have a professional dedicated database administrator with experience with MSSQL, the ACT! product will cause much grief and waste a great deal of time.

Considering the time and effort to try to get the application working correctly on a single PC, much less synchronize with other computers, it is a very expensive application to install and support.

I would not wish this software on my worst enemy.

1 out of 5 stars Oh so Slow! The worst performing software I have used.   June 15, 2006

I have used Act since it was a DOS program. This product has been going down hill since Symantec let it go. I have been using ACT 2000 and was sold on upgrading to 2006 for just a $98 upgrade fee. This was a total waste of money and time.
