It's like going from cable to dial-up June 15, 2006 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I upgraded to the new ACT! version so it could integrate with Word 2003. Boy, is it sloooow. As the title suggests, it's like going from a cable modem to dial-up - very, very painful. I would not recommend this product. Stay with you current ACT version or try something else.
Act 2006 is bad software! May 29, 2006 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This program has wasted more of my time than you can imagine. I have used ACT Software for at least a decade. Up through ACT version 6 it has been spectacular. Even I could understand how to use it. It was much less complicated and cumbersome than MS Outlook. ACT 2006 (ACT 8) has me thinking I should return to Microsoft or ACT 6. The issue that I thought might be solved with 2006 is the e-mail and WEB interface. It was not. This gargantuan program has crashed my computer more times than I care to think about and given XP Professional incredible indigestion. It seems to have been created so that A. You have to hire an expert to run all of your database activity and B. you have to pay huge annual annuities to an ACT 2006 specific SOFTWARE CONSULTANT just to be able to get a mail merge out! Don't buy it! Stay with 6 or use MS Outlook/Office! Don't get me started on their support desk options. Chase your tail! An unhappy customer! Sage Software stock price should drop through the floor!
ACT!2006 by Sage Version 8 May 21, 2006 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
Initially I was angry and disappointed in this product. I have used ACT since 1999. After speaking to SAge tech support, and spending about 8hrs tweaking and adjusting, I am now happy with the product. Though it is LOOKS better and more modern than the previous products, there are still issues.... 1. speed (it just does not work as efficiently as ACT!6, circa 2003/2004 I think). 2.If you like the look, spend the money, otherwise, as I have stated in previous reviews, the upgrade does nothing for you in terms of connections to MS Outlook (it is supposed to, but I still have problems there), and other programs, such as Quickbooks (both would be reasons to purchase ACT). 3. ACT is still the best IDEA for a database, and remains the most malleable and fun, when it actually works. 4. I would rate the SAGE team to be better than the BEST Software team/backup. 5. I am now using the software purchased, but am still wondering if I will ever see my rebate as promised with my purchase.

Sexy New Features, but slow and buggy May 17, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've been an ACT! user for about 20 years now, and have been very pleased with the product overall. However since they came out with the window's version some years ago, my enthusiasm has slowly waned. Version 2006 is slow, but usable. One new feature I very much like is being able to get a contact's Mapquest map with one click of the mouse. I also like the new format for calendars and the fact you can finally print them out.
But on the downside, not only does this version run slower, you are forced to operate it slower. Back in the MS DOS days with a few key strokes you were into the word processor typing a letter. In a matter of 90 seconds from start to finish you were printing that letter. Now you have to grab your mouse and hunt-and-click, hunt-and-click, hunt-and-click ... your life away. It takes 3 to 5 minutes longer to create the same letter. With this version you are forced to use the mouse time and time again. Even previous Window's versions gave you keyboard controls, but many are now gone or replaced with new hunt-and-click functions. When you've used computers for many years you learn two things: Keyboard - fast; Mouse - slow.
The program also has bugs. Example: After doing a letter I print an envelope. However ACT! has the format set up for an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper rather than an envelope. They admit they have a bug, and for now you can play with margins to force it to work, but it's a pain.
I upgraded my Palm to a TX (which gets 5 stars as it's an excellent product) and was forced to upgrade my ACT! because they don't' support the older Palm OS.
Recommendation: If you don't have to upgrade, I'd wait. If you are new, and can buy an older version, do that.
Act 2006 does not perform. Painfully slow. May 16, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was a satified Act user until the introduction of Act 2005 which was painfully slow & quirky. At times it does not restore when minimised.
I upgraded to Act 2006 which was a fatal mistake as none of the initial problems were resolved. I am using an Intel dual core processor at 2.8GHZ & 1 gig ram which has had a major impact on system performance but 0 improvement on Act 2006.
Technical support is expensive at US$50/10minutes & the web site is not much help & requires endless logons. They have a list of settings to change to "improve performance" but these changes had no effect.
I expect the same pertformance & support from Act as I receive from Symantec, Intuit, Papetrport10, Picasa, Skype & other products but it appears that Act is not responding to its critics. There are very few updates emanating from Act.
I will not upgrade to any future versions until it is clear that they understand user expectations.
