Please release a basic basic version. February 23, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have used Quicken basic for some time now.. I think, since at least 92. Like all software, it continues to expand with more functions, more color, more help and more junk.
I had resisted the upgrade from Quicken 2003 until I got the message that I would not be able to download using that version from April 2006. I really did not want to purchase 2005, but in hindsight, I probably should have.
I only use the basic functions and I really wish there was an option to just do away with all the crap that they continue to put into new versions. The software tries to think for you and tries to improve your finances. However, all I want is a good register for keep track of my accounts and to download credit card transactions.
The only improvement I like so far, is the use of different colors in the register for transactions before today and after today.
One item I dislike is being prompted to enter a schedule transaction. The choices for ST are either 'Remind me' or 'Enter Automatically'. I select remind me with a time of 0 and it bugs me continually to enter it. Sometimes, expecially for credits, I wait until the check clears before I enter it, but I do not want to change the date of the ST!
Still the best program out there.. but Intuit, Please make Quicken Basic, BASIC!

This is a great tool to assist you with money management. It's easy to use and very easy to set-up.

I received my purchase on time with no problem. I have found ordering throught Amazon is the quickest and fastest way to make a purchase.

Poorly executed release February 13, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've been a long time Quicken user and decided to upgrade from Quicken 2002 to Quicken 2006 as Intuit has "sunset" the older version. I held off upgrading for last 4 versions because they were buggy and Intuit has been disabling or removing core features that I use frequently. I was aware of the flap over the elimination of the QIF format, but since I don't download data from financial institutions I thought I could live with the new QFX format. Wrong. Quicken 2006 imports to checking, savings, and credit card accunts (the most important accounts) ONLY in the new format, but has NO ability to export in the new format. This makes it impossible to transfer account data from one Quicken database to another, or to rebuild accounts if the your database file gets corrupted. After four years killing off QIF you'd think they would be able to export in the new format or provide the means to transfer between databases, a capability Quicken has had since the DOS days.
Other long time Quicken features are broken, e.g., Quick Fill's automatic drop-down lists (annoying) can't be disabled without also disabling the auto completion feature (useful), which is contrary to the online documentation, while other bugs that have been around for four or five versions still haven't been fixed.
Overall very poor execution. The new features are basically eye candy and don't make up for the loss in functionality. Stay away if you're a long time user, you're likely to be very unhappy.
Finally, their support staff, while providing timely responses via email, can't help. They only offer apologies, and recommend making product improvement suggestions.
