I Love Quicken! March 9, 2006 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have never used Quicken prior to ordering it and it is one of the most user friendly pieces of software I have ever used. I use it to track both business and personal expenses for the Financial Planners that I work for and it has really made my job must easier. The reports that I can generate also help the planners keep a handle on what areas they are spending money in while they are trying to build their practice. I would recommend Quicken to anyone that wants to gain a better understanding of how their money is spent.
limitations with the investment accounts March 3, 2006 25 out of 27 found this review helpful
Despite being able to copy transactions in the investment center I was unable to paste them.
You can't merge two investment accounts.
You can't export the data and then reimport it. The documentation says they are going with OFX instead of QIF and that's why I can't import. I didn't find an OFX import, and I can't do an OFX export. Basically it was borken with 2005 and has not been fixed.
I contacted support and was told that they don't support export and reimport and don't support merging of investment center accounts.
I also don't like the new quick entry investment editor that allows you to edit the rows, but not see the selections for each of the columns (enough to store about 10 characters) and I can't change the column widths. At least the entry editor from the last version is still available.
This all came up when one of the businesses I use finally now works with quicken after a year of being available but not working. I expected the data to map to two accounts came in as one set of transactions for one account. Now I can't get the transacations into the separate accounts nor can I merge the accounts in quicken.
The end result here is that I just continue to enter the data manually and not use the online interface.
Going Down Hill February 26, 2006 34 out of 39 found this review helpful
I am a long time Quicken user and certainly appreciate it's ability to help keep my finances organized.
Unfortunately though, over the years, I have found bugs in the program and reported them to Quicken. For years, I have been uprgading to the newest version hoping that the bugs will be fixed. Not so!
The latest 2006 version, not only doesn't fix the bugs, but introduces new ones- and it runs much slower than v. 2005.
Quicken Deluxe 2006 or Microsoft Money? February 26, 2006 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I was undecided as to which software I should go with because the reviews were both in question. Finally decided to go with Quicken as I also keep track of my sons finances who lives in another state. I am very pleased with the program as I have upgraded from 2000 Quicken Basic. The downloads are easy although I do not download anything except for stocks which I have a problem figuring out to do manually. Some stock places do not have downloads due to the small account I have so I have to do these manually but can't figure out so I just put it into a cash account and then go to overview and just move it into investments. Although this does not give you a summary of what is going up or down or gains or losses I can see what I have. The only problem I have is still trying to backup the information because with windows XP you need to back up to a CD into your CD burner program. Still working on trying to get this to work as I have always been used to backing up to a floppy even if I had to use 2 or more since I am not all that computer savey at 62. I wish they would explain investments better and saving bond which are a bit baffeling. They should have a more detailed example of such things when shares are not give or amounts or vise versa. Otherwise, I am pleased with the program.
Wish I had not upgraded February 25, 2006 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
I got this upgrade to better track my 401k and I wish I hadn't. I've been a loyal Quicken user for almost ten years and I would discourage anyone from getting this version. The screens are way too busy, the functionality is too complicated, and the help section just leads you around in circles. I have a business degree so I understand the basics of accounting, but you'd have to be a CPA to understand this. Either that or it's just bad programming. Keep the packaging if you get it, you'll need it to return it. I know, I've tried.
