Quicken not great for MS Money user February 19, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Quicken 06 looked pretty intriguing, and I was due for an upgrade to my copy of Money 04 so I decided to try and make the switch.
The quick version: I'm sending Quicken back.
The longer version:
Money file conversion is unforgivably horrible. (Even if you're successful, expect to start over with your budget and bill schedules) You're better off starting a Quicken file from scratch. That's time consuming and wasn't worth it for me.
Get used to being hawked all kinds of Quicken-branded services. I know MS Money does this too - but at least you can turn some of the ads off, and menu selections that take you out to MSN are tagged with a buttefly on the cursor (at least in MSM 04) so you know before you venture out into MSN. I know the tie-ins are good marketing for Intuit - but selling me services inside an application that's supposed to organize my money strikes me as in poor taste.
Bland interface. The color scheme is so soft that I had a hard time quickly finding what I was looking for. There might be an option for a bolder color scheme(?). Maybe it was just the learning curve coming from MSM.
Very limited QIF import - it's a common complaint from other reviewers. I didn't find that it effected downloads from most of my financial institutions. Probably best to check with your banks and brokerages to see what formats they support before buying though.
Overall, there are some nice features in Quicken - I like the snapshot of spending for payees in the register. The reciept handling in PDF seems neat too - though who has time to scan in all that? Quicken 06 seems like pretty good software, and is generally easy to use, but I'd caution longtime MS Money users to stick with that flavor of financial software unless they want to start over in Quicken.
Ads, bugs and time bombs, this junkware has it all February 10, 2006 38 out of 40 found this review helpful
After being a loyal quicken user for twelve years, this is the last version of quicken I'll ever buy. I wish I could get my money back. I'm switching to Moneydance.
Here's my beefs. The program scrolls annoying ads across the borders of my screen; no way to turn them off. Without permission, it accesses the internet and downloads new ads. It hangs my computer. I can only use it for about half an hour before I have to reset. If that's not enough, after three years, it will automatically download an "update" that will disable major portions of the software. The "fix," according to Intuit, is to buy a new version. Check out the fine print, if you recently got new glasses.
Bad news and bad software from an increasingly arrogant company. Even Microsoft doesn't intentionaly destroy their customer's software to get us to buy new versions.
Just know that you WILL upgrade--or else February 5, 2006 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
I was a Quicken user for many years. If you decide to purchase, just remember that you will be upgrading whether you are happy with the current product or not. After spending hundreds of dollars, losing functionality (I really miss the inventory program that used to come with it) and dealing with tech support that consistently told me to wait until the next release, I recently received e-mail telling me I would not be able to use "online bill pay; downloading financial data from your bank, credit union, credit card, brokerage, 401(k), or mutual fund accounts; downloading stock quotes, news headlines, and other financial information into Quicken; uploading portfolio information from Quicken to Quicken.com; and access to the investing features on Quicken.com, including portfolio tracking, any watch lists you have created, One-Click Scorecard, Stock Evaluator, and Mutual Fund Evaluator" after April 26 unless I upgrade from 2003 to 2006. I use MS Money now...
You will lose your data and never be able to get it back. February 1, 2006 18 out of 30 found this review helpful
Intuit uses a proprietory file format. If you have a crash, or have to reinstall, you have a very good chance of losing all your data.
And then you can't get it back. Ever. Gone Forever.
Otherwise it's a great program.
Do your research on Quicken Capabilities before you buy January 25, 2006 23 out of 28 found this review helpful
Quicken is a pretty good software and may even do things better than MS Money -- which I currently own. The problem I have is that This version, and has been since Quicken 2005 -- or so I'm told by Quicken, only uses their proprietary format QIF. It doesn't use the Open Financial Exchange format (OFX) like MS Money. If ALL of your financial institutions, including those you MIGHT use, don't support QIF prepare for lots of manual entries.
I decided to go back to my MS Money and get a refund for Quicken.
