You'll be sorry January 14, 2006 36 out of 41 found this review helpful
I have been using Q for close to 20 years. Once you have that much data in it, it's hard (or at least scary) to switch to a new program. Everytime I send Q upgrade money I keep hoping they will fix the bugs. The worst ones being data corruption. Q stores all your data in a database. Unfortunately there db design is also about 20 years old and gets corrupted. When it gets corrupted it's bad, you can loose data, funny things will happen (transactions lost, bad totals, duplicate entries). It happens to me about every 4-6 months. Being aware of this I backup Q every couple of days.
Tech support very bad. Intuit uses it as a revenue stream. You get free online and email. But the answer usually is "this is to complicated for email please call 1-800-India"; Have your credit card ready $25/each.
I don't like the MS Money interface; I hate the Quicken bugs but I am still using it.
Easy to use and feature laden January 7, 2006 26 out of 28 found this review helpful
Just upgraded to Quicken 2006 Deluxe from Quicken 98 (yep, you read that right, as in 1998) Deluxe.
Very easy to install and upgrade the software. Automatically imported and converted my password protected Quicken 98 files.
Did *NOT* import my Quicken Home Inventory. I have not yet found where the Q98 inventory files are, and I have not been able to find any documentation in the help files to indicate if this is a bug, or intended. The Home Inventory hasn't changed one bit in eight years -- this is exactly like the Q98 version. Surprisingly, there is no ability to attach pictures to items in the inventory.
I have not yet found a new feature that has made me think: "WOW this is really great and justifies worth spending time and money to upgrade", but it clearly has many more features than my old version. I haven't noticed anything that has changed for the worse, or been taken away, so all-in-all, this upgrade was worthwhile.
Here are some observations so far:
Installation created a bunch of links on my desktop for banking services , credit cards, credit reports. I don't know what these were -- I just deleted them
Automatically assigned categories to groups and then used these groups in budgets and reports. Some of these groups were completely wrong, and it took me a while to fix them.
Has two overview pages: 1. "Quicken Home" that is *very* customizable to provide an overview on one page of pretty much anything you want to see with four tabs, each with different perspectives or your finances. 2. "Financial Overview" with tabs that give summaries of net worth, planning and tax situations.
Has a nice pop-up report on the register -- select a transaction, click the icon and a report pops-up showing all recent transactions for that payee. Pop-up report has button to create a full payee report as well. I find this very useful.
*Much* easier to use the investment portfolio planning and reporting tools in this version.
Setting up stock option grants and ESPP transactions is a breeze. I haven't been able to figure out how to set up restricted stock grants.
It has a fixed list of asset classes (large cap, small cap, international, etc) and you cannot add more asset classes. This means that if you have a chunk of your portfolio in REITs, or gold stocks, or sector funds, then the asset allocation tools do not help much.
*Much* easier to set up and analyze budgets. Easy to plan budget on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis for each category. Can easily get a report of previous year's spending for a particular category while developing a budget.
Layout is very different from Q98, with much more information shown on a screen, which is either an advantage, or just clutter. Fairly easy to customize the screen layouts.
Has very useful full-screen view just by pressing F11.
However, some other key combinations are inconsistent and unpredictable. Almost every Windows software that I use control-insert, control-delete, and shift-insert are copy, cut and paste. In the Q2006 register, this is true, but for some bizarre reason control-insert does not work in the budget -- it minimizes that window and returns to the register.
Did not import savings goals as savings goals, but imported them as assets: I am not sure if this is a bug or feature. I haven't figured out how to make them savings goals so that I can get 'progress against goal' reports.
Some of my saved reports were imported just as previous, some required tweaking to get them the way I like them, and some were totally mangled and I had to re-create them.
I have not tried the Quicken Online BillPay -- my bank gives me free online bill pay.
One last note: to be able to download stock prices you must register the software -- fair enough, but you must also create a quicken.com account. I have no idea why this is needed, or what the benefits are. Seems that this is some sort of marketing ploy by Intuit, but I haven't been able to figure out the catch yet.
It is unclear to me what, if any, information is sent to Quicken or how that information is used by Quicken when I use online services such as download bank transactions or download stock quotes.
I just had a on-line chat with William at the Quicken Help and Support Center. Here's the transcript:
Me: How do I cancel the quicken.com account William: If you don't want to use QIuicken.com please don't open it again it will automatically be deleted. Me: How long does it take before it is automatically deleted? William: It will take up to 3 months. Me: How do I cancel the account if I don't want to wait that long? William: We cannot cancel the account manually it is canceled automatically. Me: Thanks for the information. That was very helpful. Bye.
Transcript of on-line chat with Samuel at the Quicken Help and Support Center:
Me: Sometimes when I start Quicken 2006 for Windows, I get a message like "Do you want to update Quicken now?" What exactly is being updated? Samuel: The update message that you are getting is to update the current version of Quicken you are using. This helps us to work in Quicken more easily. Me: What exactly is getting updated? Samuel: It updates basic features of Quicken and any fixes earlier known issues. Me: So these are bug fixes? Samuel: Yes Me: Is any information about my accounts sent to Quicken during this update? Samuel: No Me: Where is the list of bugs that are getting fixed with each update? Samuel: You can check it at Quicken.com Me: Can you give me the link to the exact page that shows the bug fixes? Samuel: I am sorry, there is no such single list available in a link that I can provide to you. For more details, you can visit Quicken.com Me: OK, thanks.
Me: Is there a way to update Quicken without waiting for the automatic update at startup? Samuel: You can go for One Step Update. This option is given under Online menu. Me: Does that update the bug fixes? Samuel: Yes Me: OK That's all very helpful. Thanks very much for your help. Bye.

Karan K.: Hi, my name is Karan K.. How may I help you? Me: If I change the dollar amount of a scheduled transaction the budget line item for that category changes as well. How do I stop that? Karan K.: So, you change the amount of a scheduled transaction, the budget for that item automatically changes. Is that correct? Me: Yes. I want to stop the changes to the budget Karan K.: This is because you have created automatic budget which is based on the transactions entered in Quicken. Me: OK. How do I change that feature of an existing budget? Karan K.: You can create manual budget. Karan K.: Please open Quicken. Karan K.: From Quicken menu, go to Planning >> Budget.\ Karan K.: Click on manual and click on Create Budget. Me: Nope. I want to change an existing budget from automatic to manual Karan K.: I am sorry to inform you that its not possible in Quicken. Me: Is this a bug, or a feature? Karan K.: Its not a bug, this is a feature of Quicken. Its by default. Me: OK thanks. This information was very helpful. Bye.
No QIF Import? Then no Quicken 2006! December 31, 2005 65 out of 69 found this review helpful
I tried upgrading from Quicken 2001 to Quicken 2006 Deluxe and liked everything about it except the most important thing: Quicken 2006 will not allow me to import my transaction data from my bank.
Why? My bank, like MANY others, supports the QIF file format. Intuit deliberately disabled this feature after Quicken 2004. I spoke with my bank and discovered that the new download method, "direct connect," requires the bank to pay large fees to Intuit.
Big disappointment!
Better than 2004 but no QIF support December 31, 2005 37 out of 37 found this review helpful
I have been using Quicken since Quicken DOS 2.0 and most of the time upgraded to the current version when one came out. One "upgrade" to Quicken 2004 was so bad (I had to revert to prior version) that I stopped doing it. This version (2006) seems to be stable and does not crash all the time like 2004 did.
The layout of screens improved somewhat and there are new nice views of investment accounts. I do not care much for reports browser, when a drill down or modification of options create a new page, like an Internet browser.
The biggest problem for me is lack of support for QIF format. If you want to download historical transactions from Fidelity you are out of luck. Ironically if you use an old version, prior to 2004, you are fine. Typically you expect more in the new release, not less.
The overall balance is somewhat neutral. Improvements are mostly cosmetic but numerous. The dropped support for QIF import is a single big flaw that comes to mind, but is a big one.
The Best Personal Finance Software December 27, 2005 2 out of 24 found this review helpful
I upgraded to Quicken Deluxe 2006 recently. This is one of a kind! Quick reports, tabulated or graphic formats give you instant picture of your spending, networth, and progress toward your goals. It cannot get any easier to take responsibility of your finances and start investing for your future. I recommend this software to anyone serious about her finances. Even my 72 year old mother-in-law does all her banking on it!
