Don't make a mistake March 9, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
It's almost impossible to go back and correct an error, which makes the program very frustrating. I would have been better off doing it the old-fashioned way - a paper return. I don't understand why these programs have to be so limiting when it comes to corrections.
Glaring problems and idiotic customer support March 8, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased TaxCut Premium this year. Big mistake. I encountered two problems with the Schedule C. First, I found that two different business types had the same Principal Business codes. Second, and truly egregious, is that the interview process for the Schedule C (for a sole proprietorship) neglected to ask about Cost of Goods Sold!!! For a retailer this is generally the largest expense! The Final Review feature didn't even provide a warning that these fields were blank on the Schedule C. It's easy enough to get around, going directly to the form, but when I contacted customer support to alert them to these problems they gave stupid answers like "delete the form and then go through the process again." Huh? Ridiculous.
Turbo-Tax or Tax Cut? March 6, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Depends on if you're an Intuit fan or not. I'm a recent malcontent with Intuit. Tax cut will import last year's Turbo Tax file without any problems. The user interface is similar. The only thing that I've noticed so far that's different is that it doesn't allow the option of downloading your W-2 data from the payroll provider.
Easy to Use, A Great Value March 6, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my first time using an electronic tax program, and I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to use. I had no problems installing the software whatsoever. Plenty of help links and instructional videos make filing hassle-free and understandable. The integration of e-filing with the software makes life easier and the refundable federal e-filing fee makes this software a great value.
Amazon won't let me rate TaxCut a 1-star! March 6, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have used TaxCut for several years now. It used to be a great product, but this year's (2005) quality has noticeably slipped, especially TaxCut California.
* California's Schedule W is missing. I called H&R Block, but they wouldn't fix this. Luckily this is not fatal because Schedule W is used only for attaching W-2 forms. I just stapled them to the whole return.
* Bad filing instructions. It neglected to tell me to attach my federal return to my California return. Good thing I caught it.
I encountered other minor annoyances too, in both the federal and California programs. Overall, though, TaxCut still gets the job done.
===== latest update =====
I wrote the above review a few weeks ago, rating TaxCut 3 stars. I have since encountered a nasty problem in TaxCut that changed my mind. It should really deserve 1 star, but Amazon apparently won't let me change the rating. User beware! Anyway, here is the situation that changed my mind:
A few weeks ago, I had answered all federal and California questions in TaxCut. Forms 1040EZ and 540-2EZ, respectively, had been picked. I hadn't filed yet. Now I decided to make a deductible Traditional IRA contribution. After making the change in TaxCut, it increased my federal refund accordingly, but not my California refund! Thankfully I noticed it, and had to manually make TaxCut switch from 540-2EZ to 540 for the California refund to increase. TaxCut almost lost my fair share of tax savings!
