Easy budgeting at last! August 28, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
After years of using Quicken or MS Money, I finally stumbled upon this little gem. YNAB Pro has become the answer to my budgeting prayers. No more clunky not-user-friendly budgeting software (buh bye Money! See ya Quicken!). YNAB makes it easy to create a budget, track your money flow, and get a handle on your financial life. Like to download your transaction from your bank's site? Simple and easy to import into Pro. Follow Jesse's Rules to more stable finances. Overall, two big thumbs up. I highly recommend YNAB Pro!

I will leave the futures of YNAB to other reviews. This is an OK program but is defiantly not for everyone. The idea behind YNAB is great but delivery of that idea is short. Basically, YNAB tells you where you are spending your money and that is the main strength of it. This software is nothing more then a logbook, pencil, and calculator. You can also do the same thing with any quality spreadsheet program. Personally I like YNAB program but it dose require dedication on a day-to-day basis. I do believe that most of the positive reviewers are short-term users. After 4 or 5 months most user will have set YNAB aside or use it in a very reduced role as I do.
The reason for this is: 1) Time consuming. Get ready to put some time in this software. The best way to use this software is to put time into it every day. If you wait a week, assuming you have 5 or more transactions a day, plan on a long session with YNAB.
2)Little flexibility and what flexibility there is become confusing.
3)DO NOT USE IT AS A BANK ACCOUNT BALANCER. You can make some errors that you will not detect until its to late.
4)The import function is really basic but you will find it is better to manually enter the data each day.
If YNAB is not for you, it will not be the money you spent but the time you put into it that will be frustrating. On the other hand, if you can put the time in, it may be the answer you're looking for.
So frustrating July 28, 2008 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
I need accounting software to tally my wasted hours.
Despite the fact that every entry in the software matches my bank statement exactly each month, my YNAB register balance can be off by as much as $3,000. It's completely inexplicable.
I have entered "balance adjustments" only to find that the problem recurs the following month. I have even asked my husband to review the register against the bank statement in hopes that he would see some massive mistake I was making. Nothing. There is just some bug in the software that makes it useless.
Writing to YNAB has yielded no advice. Don't buy this software.
Not sure why this is #1 June 26, 2008 5 out of 15 found this review helpful
Im not sure why this budget software is number one on amazon. I bought it because the reviews said it was great and was better then quicken and money. I thought I would recieve it in a box with directions on how to use it. Nope. All I got was a DVD case with a number sticker on the front of the plastic wrap that I almost threw away (it didnt say that it was important to using it until I installed it). Then once I had it installed I had to go on the website and down load the upgraded version because it wasnt the newest or whatever. It was $5 so I did it anyways. Didnt notice a difference. There were no directions on how to use the thing. There is a help section that you can print out on your own printer (paying for your own ink and paper) that is about 50 pages long. Yes it is simple...very simple almost to plain for me. The register didnt work with downloading from my bank online so i input everything by hand. The budgeting tool is a joke. when you enter an amount you budget for it puts you in the negitve and it is all very confusing...would help if it came with directions. I find it a waste of my money and I wish I could return it. Most pointless 40 bucks I have ever spent. I wish I would have tried money at least it has been around a while. Long story short...save your money and try something that have been around a little longer.
The best budgeting methodology out there May 23, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've used Quicken for over 10 years (and still do) but Quicken (and similar personal finance software) is absolutely incapable of doing budgeting. YNAB does budgeting beautifully and fills this glaring gap. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because YNAB reporting capabilities are very limited.
